I had my Toshiba laptop dual booted with Windows 7 and Backtrack 5. I tried to add Slitaz and when the installation completed the machine rebooted to a black screen with grub rescue prompt. I have tried reading everything I could find. Can someine please help?

Well, your help request is a little bit generic :-) , i assume that you did install Slitaz's grub and it overwritten your existing grub in MBR.
Do you still have Bactrack 5 installed?
If yes you could try to repair your grub following these istructions:

Linux Mint grub can boot slitaz (i boot it this way) so i would think that Ubuntu can do it too.Posted 11 years ago # -
I tried to reinstall BackTrack 5 to try and fix the problem and it freezes on the backtrack backsplash. I also tried a Slitaz Installation. Here is the partitions list from that attempt.
/dev/sda1 unkown
/dev/sda2 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 Win95/FAT32
(LBA) /dev/sda4
Extended
When I type the command ls in the grub rescue prompt I get these results.
(hd0) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)
I'm not sure how to reinstall the grub to the master boot record like you suggested. I did read a post somewhere about Ubunto with grub 2 might be easier so I was wondering what you thought about that.Posted 11 years ago # -
Looks like your grub can see partitions 1, 2, & 3.
Therefore, I would suggest no partitions are in the extended section, & therefore no Linux installed on the machine.
Using a live distro, in a terminal, as the root user, run 'fdisk -l' to see if you have any other partitions on your disk. You will need at least one (/dev/sda5) in which to install Linux.Posted 11 years ago #
