offlineMemberHi Experts, I came here following http://www.tuxradar.com/content/whats-best-lightweight-linux-distro Well if there is stable version which comes with all needed stuff and can readily connect to internet out of box. Light weight, fastest boot and shut down time. Then that's my version .. I go for lightest and lightest DTE, people suggested LCFE.. but I look for advice. Please let me know. offlineKey MasterDo you mean LXDE or XFCE? There is no LCFE to my knowledge. By default SliTaz uses the majority of the LXDE tools namely Openbox, Pcmanfm, Leafpad, LXAppearence and LXRandr. LXTerminal, LXShortcut and LXDM can be found in the repository if you want a complete LXDE enviroment. XFCE is also in the repository if you'd rather use that.

offlineKey MasterWell, when I used XFCE4 with SliTaz 3 it only used like 5-6MB or RAM more to run than LXDE did, which is nice considering all the extra features it added. I kind of like it because it's very GNOME2-like, but lighter and simpler. It's by far my favorite DE. It has some issues in SliTaz 4, but I bet if I spent some real time on it, I could get it to work fully again. I'll probably end up writing some guide on how to use it when I eventually get to it.

offlineMemberi use the ubuntu based version of crunchbang. it is more polished than slitaz, and almost everything works out of the box.
I use slitaz 3 and it took me more time to tune it to my need,but it uses less RAM and is faster.
IO disks as measured by hdparm was i believe about 25% faster.

What is ubuntu based version of Crunchbang. I am aware of woldorf and slater 10. Crunchbang is good ready from box with wireless connected. Do you get connected to internet out of box in Slitaz as well. I will download today anyways Slitaz actually ver 4 and test it. So please can you tell what do you mean by Crunchbang being more sophisticated. Cheers

Most everythings works out of the box with crunchbang and required some hand tuning with slitaz.before slater there was an unbuntu based version of crunchbang, about 3 or 4 years ago.
I still use it but the repos are broken so i cannot update anything anymore except manually on my own. I never updated to Slater which has incompatiliities with my hw that i never tried to fix.Internet connection will or will not work out of the box with slitaz depending on your hw.

offlineMemberThank you christophe. Yes sorry about quoting sophisticated instead of polished. I am very happy with Slitaz but unlike crunchbang, I cannot get the wireless working .. I am tired trying all ways. Unless some one helps me .. Unfortunately I don't have ethernet to support myself. If I cannot get this working it is such a shame, I cannot use Slitaz if my efforts fail. offlineKey MasterFor Wireless I would recommend PCLinuxOS - from experience it's one of the few out of box Linuxes that support even rare wireless cards. Or just stick to Crunchbang.
I say this because SliTaz is not easy and it's wireless access tends to require some effort to work. It's a work in process with a very small development team of which pankso does the majority of work. The support team is mostly just users like you and me who took up a role to help others with their issues. Both of which are extremly small compared to TinyCore and Puppy who are flooded with developers and forum/irc support. Stuff falls through the cracks and half the time your left to figure the problem out yourself. This suits me since I love solving things, but it doesn't appeal to everybody.
So what I'm saying is use what works for you and then stick with it.

offlineMemberThank you Trixar_za, feel so good to solve issues really. Good for you, yeah my bad luck I got struck with this issue. I would continue to work on this to resolve this issue at free time. Tried Puppy linux too, it has too many features and it's quick as well but could not get to wireless there as well !! slitaz appears to be good for some programming stuff and to understand linux which I want to learn.

Wireless works out of the box for me on 2 out of 3 laptops own, all with different WiFi adapters. For the one that didn't work right away, I used Hardware Detection to figure out the right firmware required, then booted up my pen drive on a laptop with the wifi working OOB, installed the required firmware, saved to LiveUSB, and then booted up the problem laptop again. I guess if you had just one laptop you could use a LAN cable temporarily, get the net working on Slitaz, use Hardware Detection and install the right firmware before rebooting and switching over to WiFi. So far Slitaz 4.0 WiFi has worked OOB on 80% of the laptops / desktops I've tried it on. Hats off to the developers.
