okkeeey :)from the wiki: SliTaz GNU/Linux is a free operating system working completely in memory.
I rooted slitaz4 (as I did with my phone:)), removed all docs and games, bypassed the root/root panel, and so on, just a week after I met slitz4.. why? because I need MEMORY! :)) isnt it the MAIN purpose of slitaz? only after that, I fall in love with slitaz.. and cant go back window$ anymore! :))its years Im using it, never got any "virus", never had any root related issue, believe it or not! :)
Anyway, please,just keep the os structure as in slitaz4, so that Ill be able to "customize" it again, thanks ;)

Hi all,
Realy glade too see the community active!
@nikitan questions
You got some correct anser about root, it's a security reason. Now on beeing asked for root password each time you use TazPanel. We are NOT going to remove the password, again, for security reason. But, we use TazWeb when you run Tazpanel from the menu, and TazWeb is minimal and secure web browser: it dont save passwords or cookies or whatever a website want to know about you.
If you use TazPanel with Midori or Firefox, then you can tell te browser to save the password. Try:
$ midori http://localhost:82
If you want to use Midori with Tazpanel by default, you can create a launcher on the desktop.
The wiki is a local wiki = the documents are saved in RAM or HD or USB key (depends on the slitaz mode used). It is very small any we include it to hace an office writer like application. Same for the spreadsheet, for a few Kb you have a office spreadsheet application!
Wikipedia is NOT installed localy: These are only menu entries starting the default browser on the sites. This is done with a single file, too see it:
$ cat /usr/share/applications/wikipedia.desktop
Bitbucket, wikipedia, twitter are provide by the package: web-applications. Remove it to remove thes menu entry, but you not save much space :-)
For the SliTaz doc: we include a get-started guide and release note on stable for people who dont have any internet connection. SliTaz is also used in some country where internet is very limitated, and in classroom without the web. This one of our humanity helper!

Hello all
On my hard disk I had two empty partitions hda5 and hda6 which are now used by Slitaz-5.0-rc1 after installation "by hand" (mkfs, mount, cp, lzma and cpio). After editing menu.lst I have two entries Slitaz-4.0 (hda1, hda2, hda3)and Slitaz-5.0-rc1 (hda5, hda6)
Reboot on Slitaz-5.0-rc1.
Login tux passwd none ok. X starts, ok. Change the keyboard : #tazkeymap (choice fr-latin1) or #loadkeys fr and #setxkbmap fr ; in order to have that persistent, replace us with fr in
/etc/X11/xorg.d/40-Keyboard.conf
Firewall
#hwsetup firewall install iptable and linux-netfilter and rcS.conf is automatically upgrade (RUN_DAEMONS="firewall httpd")
Problem : error in /usr/bin/tazpkg line 3076 no file INSTALLED/iptables/files.list
PCmanfm
No problem after #tazpkg recharge && tazpkg up and reboot
Usb disks are mounted automatically when they are plugged in.
Time
#date is ok but #hwclock returns "can't open /dev/misc/rtc" so I've added modprobe rtc and hwclock --hctosys at the end of /etc/init.d/rcS
May be LOAD_MODULES="rtc" is enough (in /etc/rcS.conf) ?
Skype
#tazpkg -gi skype then $skype returns error with /etc/machine-id
This problem is solved with #dbus-uuidgen > /var/lib/dbus/machine-id
Now $skype starts skype and stop right now.
This problem is solved by #mkdir /var/run/udev then #/etc/init.d/dbus start and check if UDEV="yes" in /etc/rcS.conf
Multimedia, office
In order to have the sound : #alsactl init
No problem here : I've installed libdvdcss, libdvdread, smplayer, aspell, aspell-fr, abiword, abiword-plugins, gnumeric, xsane
When my old PC is out of order, I know my next Linux : Slitaz-5.0
Please, keep it simple with a true account root (with passwd) and a user account tux
I already tried *buntu (too heavy) and Arch (too much upgrades, not simple)
Do have a very nice day for all.Posted 10 years ago # -
Xorg started in 256-color mode. Fixed by adding
video=1280x1024M-32@75
kernel parameter. Or using tazx and selecting nouveau, then initrd repacking. I saw it downloads mesa? thought it's about 3d. I only need to fix 2d. This problem if only loaded with old hardware - geforce2mx400.How can I disable xterm closed by ctrl+click?
In midnight commander, shift+f3 works like shift+f5, shift+f6 = f8, and all such like this. Alt+Letter hotkeys not working too. Everywhere in tty+sakura+xterm! Terminfo packages fixes only single shift+f3 hotkey.
Me temporarily switched to urxvt.BUG! in
get-opera
script produces opera tazpkg without en.lng, so buttons are empty, string looks like variable names. fixed in line 117 by addingen

@pankso
Just would like to repeat what another user already wrote, because I also agree.
Slitaz has its own "spirit", keep it :)
Slitaz has the potential do be the SMALLEST, FASTEST, EASIEST to customize, os out there! :)
Please, dont try to find the "compromise" between those pain-in-the-ass window$, app£e, whatever, and yourself... between those ultra-fat linux main distros, and yourself.
Be yourself, because you are UNIQUE.
There are tons of os and tools for IT noobs out there... THE professionals need Slitaz! :D
And believe me, I tried everything almost...
Also you might keep in mind that some users run Slitaz ONLY live, no persistent installation, which means we made our customizations, repacked the 4 russian-dolls, and added ours... so please, dont under-evaluate the popularity of a perfectly-working modular live version.p.s. to who is afraid someone needs static docs in Slitaz because doesn't have internet... well, how did he download Slitaz first of all?:))

I just installed vesion 5.rc1 and at boot time it doesn't allow to change the kmap to spanish.
Also when I set the keyboard to spanish once installed with the spanish option it doesn't display the letter "ñ", instead it display "?". Another key that is missing is the "¿" when I pressed that one I get "?". The rest of my spanish keyboard map looks ok, but those two letter are very important in the spanish keyboard. I writting now with the 3.0 and the keyboard setup is fine. Don't want to stay in version 3.00. Will this be fix? Anything I can do in the meantime?
I use a laptop Acer, extensa5230E with an spanish keyboard bought in Spain.Posted 10 years ago # -
¿Alguna sugerencia o comentario?

@compostela Yes I already fixed the issue. When you change the keyboard layout the Xorg config must be updated. From this commit, tazkeymap/tazx will do it for you: http://hg.slitaz.org/slitaz-tools/rev/3dd4838c69c6
To fix the bug, run: 'tazx keyboard' then logout X session and login again. To verify Xorg keyboard settings you can have a look to the file:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-Keyboard.conf

Hi pankso and development team.
I have a suggestion for SliTaz 5. A modern font and differential for the system.
The suggestion is to put the default font for: "Play Font".
Information
- Author: Jonas Hecksher (www.playtype.com)
- Type: Sans Serif
- License: OFL - Open Font License. (scripts.sil.org/OFL)

Hi guys, I am realy enjoying my freshly installed Slitaz 5.0 RC1! Many thanks for the good work!
NFS issue here though:
# mount -t nfs nfs-server:/mount/in/exports/ place/to/mountnfs -o tcp,nolock,nfsvers=3
mount.nfs: Protocol not supportedIn Debian I would probably solve this by installing "nfs.common" package. How is this done in Slitaz?
I installed nfs-utils already, and I see no other nfs related packeges out there. The server side should be ok, it's been up and running for linux users for years now.
Thanks!

@Tuna130
My guess is that your server uses NFS protocol version 4, which is not currently built at all in the SliTaz linux kernel. I'm not sure why not.
Your short term solution would be to recompile the kernel with the option CONFIG_NFS_V4 set, given that you're trying to run it as a client. However, this could further be diagnosed if you know what version of the NFS protocol that your server is using.

Why in file ~.config/slitaz/subox.conf is writen my root pasword In human readable form? Isn't this a securitie issue?
Posted 10 years ago # -
@Tuna130
Do you have portmap installed and running? I don't install nfs-utils unless I'm installing a nfs server.@nger
subox.conf is there only as a convenience for users that are willing to give up some security in exchange for not having to type in the root password intazbox su
Remove the root password from subox.conf, uncheckAutosave password
fromtazbox su
next time it opens before you type in the password.Posted 10 years ago # -
Hi nger,
It will not be a security issue if you do not want this.
Please, check permissions of this file. They should be as follows:- read file: only owner;
- write file: only owner;
- execute file: nobody.
Check your user is owner of this file. That's all! Now no one other user have ability to read content of this file (you know, root user can).
In addition, best practice is to check permissions of your whole home folder. Here all the same as above (read & write: only owner), but you need to set "execute: only owner" too. In this case "execution" of folder is ability of watching its content, all files and folders it contains. So, no one other user of your system do not touch your files.
But if your hardware have ability to boot other operating system, then these rules will not works. And better you follow mojo's advice.
