I just found that PCManFM actually does show drives in the Places pane when it is run from the root account. The problem only occurs when logged-in as user (tux) and PCManFM is started with the subox. Still, shouldn't the drives be visible (and mountable) in both cases?

I really hate it when people imply they're doing SliTaz a favour by just trying it. Especially when the wording includes something akin to 'I can't do X (because I'm inexperienced/lazy/google challenged) so thus SliTaz must be useless/unusable'.
Use it or don't use it - it makes no difference to us. We work on SliTaz because it's fun and challenging. If SliTaz doesn't meet your needs, then use something that does or better yet, create a way for SliTaz to meet it. Otherwise stop acting like you're doing us any favours.

Alright, so I've been using SliTaz for some time in rolling, until some updated fucked it up. This is about a few months back, maybe more though. I never upgraded my rolling release on my sdcard for those reasons, because I felt it would not be a great experience. However, recently I decided to upgrade rolling and see what had happened. To my dismay, not a lot of good things came out of it on my netbook.
So I decided to smack 5.0 RC2 on it, and see what was what. I downloaded the iso, dd'd it to a USB, installed it on an SD card (using ext2 as the only filesystem taking up the entire SD card, and downloading the RC2 iso and using that as the installation source), and the installation went well. No errors, no worries. Or so I thought.
However, I was not very fortunate, as it seemed the bug that once had plagued my rolling release sdcard was in fact still in place.
I would love to be more conclusive on the bug, but I'm afraid that I have no idea what actually could've gone wrong.
When booting up from the SD card (which it does correctly too, I did check the grub settings and corrected a few things to ensure it booted from the sd card), and I was met with an error that I unfortunately could only catch on camera: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5579836/Pic/IMG_20140525_145739.jpg

You have been logged into the (busybox) shell.
Both 'rolling' & 'RC' are for experienced users, who will find & report any bugs they may find to the developers, this is how the team create a stable distro for the regular user.
No disrespect, but if you don't understand what is happening, I suggest you use the 'stable' version of the distro.
Please be civil at all times if you would like to be helped by people giving up their time to assist you.

Are you actually suggesting that someone who doesn't at the blink of an eye understand an error or unexpected fault, should just NOT continue using that software? Because that might be most people in the software industry as a whole. I doubt very many people even have the capabilities to do such a thing.
I do get that you do not mean to disrespect me, however I happen to also be an experienced Linux user, however not an experienced SliTaz Linux user, so this unexpected issue was not something I had forseen.
And I am, with all respect, attempting to help out here. Granted that I do not have the slightest clue what is going on, but I am merely reporting it here. I could've reported it as a bug of course, and I should probably use that path the next time. For that, I hope you can accept my apologies.

Well, you THINK that, but it's totally wrong: I didn't say that and I didn't mean what you're saying. I've already posted on this forum and these assumptions you're doing on me are quite offesive.
My only "favour" is giving my feedback about what I've found during my tests: I've installed tazndis and It didn't work. Period. Since I'm no programmer, I tried to be useful reporting what I thought could be a bug - from my humble and not acknowledged point of view, of course.
My last sentence that maybe made you think so bad had another simpler and not rude meaning: "I'm desiring to use slitaz because it suits my needs (whoah, else why i should waste time writing something here?), BUT...as i've found this "problem I can't use it. Why? Because my goddamn LAN port is broken. [p.s.: please be kind and help me if you can, i've used and distributed slitaz since v.2, i'd be pleased to keep on doing the same with v.5]".
For your information: I'm not lazy neither google challenged, in fact i've posted AFTER searching for similar cases, finding two forum posts with guides that I've followed but DIDN'T do the trick.

Trixar was careful not to address anybody personally. So, I don't take it personally and neither should anybody else. Right or wrong, people sometimes feel they have to let off steam. And why not? I couldn't care less as long as nobody is individually attacked. Christophe has invited everybody to report issues with RC-2 in this thread, and that's all that matters.

Well, he reported part of my words, hence it was direct to me. He was not careful, he kept a generic but well addressed (and senseless) criticism.
Anyway, I'm not interested in arguing further on this. All I'd like to do is to keep offering the results of my tests, get and give help whenever possible.

Yes, your post brought it up, but you're not the first nor will you be the last to make those kind of statements.
I'll be frank and say it really urks me when people use the words 'useless' and 'unusable' with regards to a distro because they went out of their way to find a feature or two that wasn't working for then like they wanted and concluded everything about the distro must be bad by association. They then go out of their way to express this, normally in a unreasonably critic tone without giving any real bug reports or viable fixes. To me that's not being helpful, but unreasonable instead.

Apology accepted. I was just trying to point out that there are the 'testing' branches, & there are the 'stable' (& relatively stable) branches.
If the stable version is not up to date enough for you, I suggest you try using 'cooking' which is a semi stable version of 'rolling'. Being as it is not the stable version, before upgrading, run it live or on an unimportant installation to check all is well before installing onto an important machine.
To me your posting sounded like a critisism, a more useful way of saying it would perhaps have been
"I have been using rolling for a little while now, but when I tried to upgrade it, I got this/these errors......"
That will make it easier (for the non English speaking developers) to try & help you. I only help out on the forum as much as I can, in appreciation of the work the developers put into making this distro.

Samba mounting works after installing cifs-utils
NFS mounts requires running portmap and using busybox mount
I setup an alias for busybox mount and busybox umount
Solved with help from llev
tazpkg can't install coreutils-directory or coreutils-file-output-full
Reverting this commit will fix the package install problem.

If I say that a pair of glasses are unusable for me because the lenses are wrong for my eye problems, i'm not saying that all the glasses are unuseful\unusable. i'm telling what's wrong for trying to give feedback so thhat you can investigate, which should be an appreciated attempt to give something to the slitaz cause.
If i'm here talking, you should understand that it's because i'm a slitaz enthusiast.
So going back to the problem i've encountered: is it a bug? Would you be interested in investigating? Do you need any kind of further report. Would you (all of you developers) please accept my suggestion about including ndiswrapper in core slitaz since it is perfect for machines with no lan onboard?

Running it under vmware only login console is available. For anyone who wants to start GUI (maybe this can be useful for geev03), as far as I have probed login as tux must be done and the following commands must be executed:
su - (to become root)
tazx (select Install or reconfigure Xorg -> vmware driver)
/etc/init.d/slim start
Then normal installation trought Slitaz Panel can be done. The first time the system is started from hard drive only login console is available again, so the same commands must be executed. Next time the GUI will start without any problem.

The SliTaz RC2 system is consuming 100% CPU. LiveCD and HD.
After 10 minutes everything is normal.
Has anyone noticed this?

I've been using Slitaz 5.0 RC2 LiveCD in a real machine and it doesn't happen here. CPU usage only increases when I move the mouse or open an application.
My PC: CPU Intel Celeron 2.2GHz; 512MB RAM.

I installed tazndis,Applications/System Tools/Manage Windows drivers wouldn't launch tazndisbox.
I ran tazndis from terminal to install my ACX111 tnet1130 Zyxel pci wireless adapter winxp driver

The wifi adapter is running at it's max Bit Rate 56 Mb/s, Link Quality 51/100 with a stable connection.
I rebooted slitaz-5.0-rc2 live cd , installed ndiswrapper and tested with same success.
This same adapter and driver fails to work with tazndis/ndiswrapper on Slitaz-3.0 but works on 2.0 and 4.0

A similar experience using ndiswrapper on lubuntu, it works on 10.04 but fails on 11.10
I ended up buying a $10.00 tenda USB wifi adapter for 3.0 and had to compile the driver before it would work.
I added gtkdialog to depends of tazndis so tazndisbox will start.
The fixed tazpkg is on the mirror.

The only problem I've had with high cpu usage is mail.yahoo.com advanced interface while clicking inbox link which locked up midori.
Changing mail.yahoo.com to basic interface solves problem.
Running live cd with 2 gigs of ram AMD X2 255 3.1 GHz dual-core 2MB total cache CPU

My 2 cents on RC2
1- no (terminal) icon for Sakura windows in the taskbar. I was under the impression that this bug had beend fixed in earlier releases ??
2- chrome does not install from get-google-chrome -- complains that
sdg-icon-resource: size argument must be numeric
Try sdg-ion-resource --help for more information
xdg-desktop-menu: file /opt/google/chorm/google-chorme.desktop does not exist
It then says it is installed but it is not
3- the screen brightness special key now works, which i find really great; would love to see the volume keys work also, if that is at all possible
The battery left indication from lxde panel also now shows some data ! great too.
4- the cursor still disappears in several occasions. The most obvious one is if I position it on the x point to close a firefox tab (no need to depress it): the cursor is gone
5- no sound at first until i pop up alsamixer. Maybe a better (non zero) default could be implemented
6- PCMANFM shows no trashcan (the option is checked in the preference menu); it does not show my usb flashdrive I booted from (I am pretty sure i have a blockid instruction to mount it as the home directory though) neither the internal disk either
that's all for today
Congratulations; I can see the improvement over 4.0 . Still soooo impressed about the tiny size. I will probably switch back to slitaz if it sticks to the RC promises I can see.....

Update> thank you mojo, now tazndis works with gui and loads drivers. unfortunately, i didn't have much luck in putting wlan0 to work...with ipw2200 the network card is recognized but doesn't come up automatically and anyway when woken up it doesn't find any network. similar thing with inprocomm network card, it doesn't work in any case. it was worth the trial anyway!

I'm a newbie on Slitaz, but I think this tip could help you (it helped me):
3 & 5 - open X terminal and try #alsactl init . The sound should work now, even the volume keys.

The ipw2200 linux driver requires firmware which is not on the slitaz live cd.

I've already tried that, it didn't work. Maybe the hardware switch is not working.
Also, I've abandoned the inprocom and tried the same thing with BCM4306 REV 03, which uses firmware b43 (discovered in one of your answers in this forum). Downloaded the firmware, installed, modprobe and it finds networks; i select mine, insert password, it says "connected" but looks like it doesn't get ip address; i think i'll open a specific thread for this.

Same problem that meat in RC1: full install on SD card doesn't want to boot (see http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-50rc1/page/4?bb_attachments=29821&bbat=1476 ). Same that necrophcodr reported in http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-50-rc2/page/2#post-30281 .
As Live works fine with the SD card, I've done the following test:
- boot from frugal and [c]lsmod [/c]then
- boot from LiveSD and [c]lsmod[/c]
- compare the 2 lists => there is a loaded module more (ch7006) when booting from LiveSD.
A search on internet didn't give me any relationship between ch7006 and SD cards; just out of curiosity, I would have tried to recompile the kernel with ch7006 but ...
