I don't think it can be a problem with the installation because SliTaz don't see your stick in Live mode. I suppose lxle kernel use something we don't have in our (but I'm not really sure because the problem is the same with rolling) or SliTaz kernel use something incompatible with your hardware.
I saw reading one of your posts again you have a Packard Bell Easynote. I had one to repare a few weeks ago (TJ65); The SliTaz rolling ran very nice on it. What's your model?
I've compiled a new kernel and modules, I have to do tests with. I don't think it can solve your problem but I hope it can help to see what happens...
Just for fun, you don't want to do a test with SliTaz 2.0 or 3.0?

Altra cosa che voglio farti notare, è che parli di 3 os su quel pc, ma da questa schermata manca una partizione

si vede quella di xp (hda1)
la partizione madre estesa (hda2)
la partizione di slitaz (hda5)
e la partizione di swap (hda6)
non è quindi solo la chiavetta usb ad averci qualche problema di riconoscimento. Non è che per caso sia lxle che la chiavetta sono formattate in reiserfs, o qualche altro tipo insolito di fs?

I don't know if this will help but yesterday evening, the informatic support of my company changed my computer. I immediately tested it with an old LiveUSB I had (rolling, kernel 3.2.53) and... yes! It works!
It works? Really? No optical mouse, no red light under it. What about a stick?
No stick! And in the boot log[c]

Hi both of you guys!
now, in order to get things clear to everybody let me point out what you were talking about - may be the long discussion went out of control somehow -
a) - to Ceel's post (16hrs ago) - yes the stick is not seen in Live mode as well, yes the pc is a packard bell easynote, model is R1010 - I guess a very basic one - roughly about 10 years old! I think you might be right on your speculations Ceel - no problem for me to test SliTaz 2.0 or 3.0
b) - to gibor's post (6 and 7 hours ago) (in English gibor for the rest of the folks 
stick is not visible neither in Live nor in uploaded system - in the screen-shot mentioned by you most probably lxle could not be seen because it was not loaded yet! I added it meanwhile.. and the stick did work right away from the very first beginning -
c) - to Ceel's post (2 hrs ago) - Ceel I'm having the feeling you shall be close to a solution - let me please know if I still have to test SliTaz older versions in my old junk or whatsoever - I'm really very curious to come to a solution to this problem - Having to give up sliTaz for lxle is definitely .. too bad

No need to test older versions; I've done it and of course it's the same. Then I've had the idea to install SliTaz on a stick, chacked it booted correctly on my old computer and then try to boot it on the new one. Here is the message at boot:

Unfortunately, I still didn't success to do my USB ports working. Can you do this test?
Start from the 4in1 Live and select Slitaz base Live
When you see the [c]slitaz language configuration[/c] screen, press immediately [Enter].
Do the same at the [c]slitaz keyboard configuration[/c] screen. The goal is to boot as quick as possible. Then don't touch anything, don't login, just wait a few seconds.
In my case I can see these messages
xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Timeout while waiting for a slot
hub 1-0:1.0: couldn't allocate port 12 usb_device
and
xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: can't derive routing for PCI INT A
at shutdown or reboot.
xhci_hcd is the USB3 support, you shouldn't have these messages but maybe others that could help.
I also see these messages with rolling when I remove/load the module. Maybe my hardware is too new to be supported (00:14.0 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI [8086:8c31] (rev 04)); we have the same symptom, I'm not sure it has the same cause.
You can also download this ISO; it's 4.0 with USB drivers compiled as modules instead builtin the kernel.
I don't think it'll solve your problem but after boot, see with [c]lsmod[/c] what module(s) [c]xxxx_hcd[/c] is/are loaded.
Then, you can as root remove the module and load it again, ie
modprobe -r ohci_hcd
modprobe ohci_hcd
Note possible messages.
Last thing, when I add [c]acpi=off[/c] at the end of the kernel line in menu.lst, USB works. But not my ethernet card...

firstly thank you for the time you dedicated to this marginal problem.
As you predicted though, I did not have the error messages you got no other error messages neither.
Downloaded the 4.0_usb.iso and as supposed it didn't solve the problem - still, using lsmod as you mentioned it didn't give me any consistent reply - in few words, I cannot see what modules xxxx_hcd are loaded. Also tried to remove the module and load it again and nothing happened.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I did all this in the "live" mode ie did not install the iso

Hi tiziano,
I thought the kernel should work in the same way in Live mode than in full installation but it seems it can be different. I'll have a look to this later. Anyway, it's always better to test a new ISO (particularly mines ;-) ) first in Live mode and then install it. For the moment we are going to work in Live mode and if we succeed we'll see how to modify your existing installation.
Boot again with my ISO and run, in a terminal, as root
modprobe uhci_xcd
dmesg | grep -i uhci
Look for error messages; post them if there are.
At this step you can also insert a stick in one of the USB 1 port, run
fdisk -l
and see if it is detected (should be [c]sda1[/c])
Test your USB ports the one after the others.
Repeat these steps for your USB 2 controller:
modprobe ehci_xcd
dmesg | grep -i ehci
fdisk -l

Let me explain what I did in order to be sure not having done anything wrong.
Booted your ISO then in a terminal:
su
Password
# modeprobe uhci_xcd
Reply:
modeprobe: module uhci_xcd not found in module.dep
Then, after second command string:
dmeg: not found
After this tested fdisk -l
No sda1 but just different hda
Obviously the USB ports are still not working

Yes, dmesg command was wrong. Also digited again Ceel suggested revised commands
here the results:
first attempt - (test1)
then fdisk reported as shown (fdisk1) - no sda1 - hda from 1 to 8 only
second attempt - (test2)
second fdisk similar to first
apparently 4 different usb bus registered and assigned to 4 different bus numbers but, in the end, my usb stick is nowhere to be seen..
tested with different sticks as well - same result
just for additional info - this notebook has 3 usb slot only

I didn't find what to do to have the USB working in SliTaz 4.0 
But this afternoon I noticed now USB ports were working with the last rolling ISO on my computer

On my computer, USB works since ISO 20160807; does not work before.
In the tazpkg.log of my full installation, I can see there was an update of the kernel and modules between 2016/07/30 and 2016/08/03. I gave a look in the wok but I didn't see any modifications during this period for kernel & modules.
Would it be possible to have the same update in the 2.6.37 kernel or to tell me what I need to modify to have the USB working in SliTaz 4.0?

Hi Ceel, nice getting news from you again since ages.
Downloaded last rolling ISO and tested it live in my old laptop. Unfortunately it didn't work either
Really don't understand why it behaves like that - as we already noticed it works with LXLE distro instead and not even its latest release!
I'm very pissed off not being able to use Slitaz with this old junk - checking latest rolling saw the attractive new design which is valuable to have - apart from the well-known fantastic performance of Slitaz
Lately gave up and used LXLE but honestly didn't like its response time comparing the one Slitaz returns...

Some additional info - tested again on an old HP company nc4200 and the usb is being seen and read flawlessly with the rolling ISO live - this pic does not connect to wifi though - most probably it depends on some missing package
However the problem persists with the other laptop which, on the other hand do recognized my wifi network
Definitely disappointing ....

@Ceel good news at last!
Lately was testing several versions live again and noticed with 4.0 had wifi box recognizing my card and connecting straight away and stably (never happened before) - no USB recognized/seen though -
Then was version 5.0 rc3 (may15) turn AND after a while the brown-striped button rolling.. the USB has been recognized and opened up, Eureka!
This version does not find my wifi network though....
The rolling version did not work either

For my part, I am still struggling to try to have USB working with 4.0
Concerning wifi, it should be possible to do it working if it can work with an other ISO. I'll have a look to the output of [c]lspci -vvnn[/c] you've posted a few months ago and open a new topic for it if I can help you.

Hey Ceel, it works with the rolling too! )
Noticed that when booting if I leave the stick inserted into the slot the process takes a while longer but apparently it try to identify the USB port itself - as matter of facts the stick starts blinking and it goes on until the process ends
By open desktop the stick is being detected and it takes a while as well until its seen and read but it definitely does - don't forget my laptop is very old
For your information, on the 4.0 version with stick in the slot the process stops - after waiting a while i did take stick out of the slot and process went on flawlessly - may it require longer time to detect it?... if you're struggling since months on this issue I don't think this might be the easy solution to the problem
Anyway thanks a lot for all your support and for the wifi matter if you can help any further
