@plumtreed packages: linux-dialup, xlc, wvstreams, wvdial, usb-modeswitch, usb-modeswitch-data and gnome-ppp - After doing the above steps (which sets pppd and user to the normally required permissions), I had to manually switch the modem using usb-modeswitch and set gnome-ppp to use /dev/ttyUSB3 (which is my default port) to make it work. Some users have reported that wvdial always worked, so it leaves the only problem remaining to be sakis3g. It's weird because sakis3g uses wvdial if it detects it.

@Trixar_za
I used your website to install Sakis3g which resulted in a 3g connection only as root, as you are aware but, now, I also have to be root to connect via wireless!
....this suggests that Sakis3g has some impact generally.

Then it's probably my mistake - Only thing I can think of is that I link /usr/sbin/chat to /bin/chat - generally that means the one will override the priority of the other. Maybe that's the problem - the permissions of /bin/chat is messed up. That's the only thing I can think of that would effect both wireless and dialup like this.

Ok, It's confirmed. Something about the sakis3g package breaks ppp dialing in SliTaz 4 - Even IF you don't change anything except uploading real commands instead of using the busybox ones. One of them is messing all this up... I may have to start from scratch with sakis3g to track down the culprit

Here we go:
IBM Thinkpad 390e P2 with neomagic video.
boots to text.
Should I just forget about it now & be happy with Win98?

@nitrogen_widget:
No, first try Slitaz 3.0 and in case of ongoing trouble Slitaz 2.0 - no joke, on some old laptops I worked myself upstairs like this.

well, I'd like to package up AdvanceMenu to launch some emulators on a recent version but I suppose I could just compile it on an older version then roll my own image for later use.
I'll give the older versions a try.

If thinkpad has internet login as root
tazx
Choose:
neomagic
After neomagic driver download/install is finished,start Xorg login manager:
slim
No internet:
Login root
X -configure
cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Follow directions: http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:xorg-xvesa

ping 8.8.8.8
No reply,then you have no internet. Which would explain why tazx tazpkg wget will not download packages.
x-configure returns
sh: x-configure: not found
X is upper-case,followed by a space then -configure
The command is :
X -configure
Also check out:

@nitrogen_widget
it might be a Ram issue with your IBM Thinkpad 390e - I had once one I think and the max was 256MB Ram? and it was 64mb inside
Did you try the lowram or 3in1 iso?
http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/stable/flavors/slitaz-3.0-xvesa.iso
http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/stable/flavors/slitaz-3.0-3in1.iso
http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/stable/flavors/slitaz-3.0-loram.iso
these are the isos for you to try......

It has 184 MB of ram.
I've got another Open box distro running on it now.
So i'll stick with that on that particular machine.
I'm going to try slitaz 4.0 on a P4 system I have.

@nitrogen_widget
login as root, then run
[c]# tazx[/c]
[*]Select: Install or reconfigure xorg
[*]Select: neomagic
[*]Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Device.conf:
[c]# sed -i 's/vesa/neomagic/' /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Device.conf[/c]
as a regular user:
$ startx
Works on a thinkpad 240 with a neomagic graphic card adapter.

your instructions helped me start x, but all I see is a mouse cursor. I can right click but the selections do nothing.
Thanks

I think you did not log out from root before you did startx

@kultex
I tried both user accounts. Even after a reboot it doesn't show anything else. I see the login greeter, but after entering my username (tux) and an empty password it goes to the blank brown screen with a mouse cursor.
