How can a non-hybrid iso like Slitaz-4.0 work on a USB stick? I thought that only hybrid iso's worked on sticks.
You're right and wrong at a time. An isohybrid image can be booted as well as from a cd-rom than a USB stick without doing anything. That the case of slitaz-3.0.iso for example: burn a cd or run tazusb.
A non isohybrid image can only be booted from a cd-rom. If you want to boot it on a USB stick, you have first to make it compatible (hybrid)
Concerning the method written by gokhlayeh/domcox/fantomas, you don't need to have an isohybrid image because you just copy iso's files and then you make it yourself manually bootable.
I've tested slitaz-4.0-firefox.iso too and I confirm, it works!
I haven't had a chance to look at this Create A Live USB program yet. It's not the same as tazusb, is it?
Yes it is! But don't worry, just format ext3 your USB stick before (with GParted or manually in a terminal as root) and you won't have any problem (I hope).
I did'nt find time to try to boot automatically a Live as root but you can in a first time suppress autologin in \boot\syslinux\syslinux.cfg.
At boot, you'll be prompt by the Slitaz LogIn Manager to log. Default user is tux (no password). Replace tux with root; SLIM will prompt you for the password, type root again and hit enter. You are now loged as root and you can access to all menus and options without typing the root password each time (excepted to open TazPanel...). Cool, isn't it?

Still no time to try the Slitaz-to-Slitaz re-install. I have to go buy a new stick as all mine are now in use. And this week I am working on my roof (between rain storms).

It would be. But do I get this opportunity to log in as root after suppressing autologin? I am a little confused.
Sorry to hear you are still having winter weather there. I hate the snow and hope I never see it again. Once, in New York, I lost my car for two months because the snow was so high. A disturbing experience that put me off not only snow but cars as well <grin>.

But just like you added lang=fr kmap=fr option!
As your stick is FAT32, you can do it from windows:
open the \boot\syslinux\syslinux.cfg file with the text editor. You must have this line
[c]append initrd=/boot/rootfs.gz rw root=/dev/null lang=fr kmap=fr vga=normal autologin[/c]
Suppress the autologin instruction (I forgot to mention it in my previous posts...) and save

Actually your stick boots automatically as tux.
After the syslinux.cfg modification, at each boot slim will open a window asking for user (default= tux). Hit enter twice to log as tux or replace tux by root; then slim will ask you the password for root. Type root again.
If you want later come back to tux, close the session, slim will open a window asking for user...

I think I get it now. Thanks, Ceel. I am making notes on everything you tell me. As soon as I can get away from work on my house I will try all these things you have been so kind to explain, and report back how they are working for me.
I know it must be frustrating to deal with someone like me who knows almost nothing about Linux and Slitaz. You have been very patient and I appreciate it.
