No Sound With Flash Plugin

   Hello,

   First let me say that I am very impressed with SliTaz. I got it running easily on an old Windows 95 machine that has never run faster.

   That said, however, I am having a pesky problem. I cannot hear anything when running a flash web application in the browser, but I can hear internet radio on Alsaplayer. I've installed every plugin and codec I could find but nothing works. I've tried Midori, Firefox and Seamonkey. I double checked that my user -- tux -- is in fact part of the audio group. The sound card is recognized and works with Alsaplayer. The Alsamixer has all the tabs set to 00 (not MM). The apps I'm running work perfectly in Puppy Linux (both video and audio) but I like SliTaz better and would like to find a solution.

   Here are my specs: Gateway, with Pentium II 233 Mhz processor; Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card; Asahi Kasei AK4531 chipset.

   Is this a bug or am I missing something?

   Thanks for any suggestions.

   Question: Are you running anything else while the Flash Video is playing? Something like a music player or internet radio or something that uses the sound card?

   If so, that's the problem. By default you can only play one sound source at a time through ALSA on cards (older ones mostly) that don't support hardware mixing without the use of some sound daemon program or modifying the ALSA config to include multiple sound streams. There is two problems with this however. A daemon would be best because it sits in the background and manages the streams properly without taking up alot of memory or CPU time. The bad news is that nobody develops that anymore for ALSA, which is why most people switch to the (heavier) PulseAudio. Now the config option is possible (I've done it), but it's also a little heavier to do and you can find a guide on doing software mixing here: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Asoundrc#Software_mixing

   If however this is not the case... then I'm not really sure what's wrong :/

   See what process's are accessing the sound device:
   Open terminal become root.
   #fuser /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
   If this displays a process number (PID) kill it.
   #kill PID
   Try to play flash now, if you have no flash audio rerun fuser command while flash continues to run.
   Do you see a PID, is it for libflashplayer?
   See what program associated with the PID:
   ps | grep PID
   For example while I play youtube video in Opera browser.
   root@slitaz:/home/tux# fuser /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
   1454
   root@slitaz:/home/tux# ps | grep 1454
   1454 tux /usr/lib/opera/operapluginwrapper 91 102 /usr/lib/opera/plugins/libflashplayer.so

   Thanks for the replies.

   Mojo, I don't see a PID number when I run the "fuser..." commands. What does that mean?

   Also, when I run the "ps | grep" command, I get a 4-digit number, a user (tux) and not much else. I certainly don't get "1454 tux /usr/lib/opera..." -- a specific location. Could that point to the issue?

   I'm not running multiple apps at the same time ... I only have a little P2 with 384 megs of RAM, so I can only do one thing at a time.

   I just installed games from the package manager, and they all play sounds with no trouble. So the issue seems to be isolated to the web browser.

   I've come to the conclusion after re-reading your first post you don't have flash installed in midori.
   If you tried to play a flash video or go to a site with heavy flash it will likely lock up your computer.
   Test your flash install: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

   Here is how to verify flash is on slitaz and how to export it's path to midori.
   Verify flash is installed in SliTaz:
   tux@slitaz:~$ ls  /usr/share/flash  
   If you see this-> libflashplayer.so
   Proceed to Step 1,2,3, or 4 depending on how you run SliTaz
   If not:
   #tazpkg get-install get-flash-plugin
   #get-flash-plugin
   Verify libflashplayer.so was installed:
   tux@slitaz:~$ ls  /usr/share/flash  
   If you see this-> libflashplayer.so
   Proceed to Step 1,2,3, or 4 depending on how you run SliTaz

   1.Full install of slitaz:
   Add to bottom of ~/.profile for each user
   leafpad /home/tux/.profile
   export MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH="/usr/share/flash"
   2 Frugal/live install to hard drive/usb key/sd card
   Add to ~/.profile for each user
   leafpad /home/tux/.profile
   export MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH="/usr/share/flash"
   tazusb writefs gzip prior to shutdown or lose flash
   3. Run live with persistent /home
   mkdir ~/flash
   root@slitaz: mv /usr/share/flash/libflashplayer.so ~/flash
   Add to ~/.profile as regular user tux
   export MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH="/home/tux/flash"
   4. Run from livecd
   Install flash
   Add to ~/.profile for tux
   leafpad /home/tux/.profile
   export MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH="/usr/share/flash"
   Redo every boot

   All methods:
   Logout X session
   Login as regular user
   Open midori, it will find libflashplayer.so
