So I have been experimenting with both Slitaz 3.0 and 4.0 for awhile now from live usb and am very impressed with how they run on my newer pc and especially my old laptop. My only problem with the distro is the lack of a media player such as mplayer or gxine. To try and solve this issue, I did this:
1. I made a live usb of slitaz justx (3.0 or 4.0)
2. I booted the usb from a virtual machine on my macbook air. (my only computer with internet access).
3. I downloaded and installed gxine.
4. I ran the commmand "tazusb writefs gzip" to create a new rootfs.gz (with sound and graphics settings removed) containing my new application.
5. To make sure eveything is working properly, I rebooted from the usb in the virtual machine. Everything went as planned and gxine is installed and working fine.
6. I plugged the usb into my old laptop with a 900 mhz cpu and 256 mb ram (the same as the vm)
7. I boot up the old pc.
This is where it all goes wrong. I have no idea why, but the older computer will only boot into command line mode! This makes absolutely no sense to me since even this old pc will comforably run even the full 3.0 and 4.0 isos and my custom filesystem is only around 25 mb. I should have plenty of ram! Maybe I am overlooking something, but i have spent many hours trying to solve this issue just so i can get a media player running on this old machine. I have included photos of the last 2 screens I see (hopefully they will be helpful). I am totally new to this distro and really just want to get this working. Any suggestions would be great as this old laptop will be my only computer this summer. Thanks!
