How did you come to the conclusion that there is a dependency?
I have perl installed but never noticed the presence of collectd.
In fact I had to look up what it was. (system statistics collection daemon)According to tazpkg -l, this package is not installed on my system so I think there is no such dependency.

Collectd depends on perl not the other way around.

Read what you wrote and you'll see why there was confusion. You can always remove unwanted packages after a package has installed them. By your own admission, perl is required by collectd so removing it will probably break it. Just because dependencies are optional in Arch doesn't mean the build receipt for it is correct or that it will work without said dependencies.

Sorry for the confusion. Collectd has many plugins which are optional and not required for it too run. I tried installing collectd and than removing perl from my virtual machine. Collectd successfully ran after uninstalling perl, so perl is not required but optional for one of the plugins.

Then it could probably be listed as optional like tcl/tk within the python receipt. I'll look into it.

It would be great if collectd could be built with support for more plugins
(i.e snmp: --with-libnetsnmp).Posted 11 years ago #
