Certainly! Here are those results. One discovery this morning - the laptop's native display stayed live a little longer today, and when X started I was able to see the normal screen and log in, saw the actual desktop for a few seconds. Then the screen quit. The external monitor was scrambled as usual. So this is apparently related to the VGA output.
