no sound via HDMI with Intel soundcard

A monitor is connected to a computer with an Intel soundcard
via display port.
The Monitor (OSD) shows: Audio Input is DiplayPort
$ aplay -l
lists three HDMI devices
$ speaker-test -D hw:0,7 -c 2 -t sine
starts alternating output to left and right speaker,
but no sound is to be heard.
With the same command on SliTaz next from 2017-06-16 with
kernel 4.9.30, sound can be heard.
Is kernel 3.16.55 configured unsuitable for HDMI sound output?
Or is something else (alsa, drivers) improperly configured?

For what it's worth, I've recently encountered some issues with firmware and some kernels reversing peripherals.
One solution was to download the firmware https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
the other was to sweep the audio devices with asoundconf

Per quel che può valere, recentemente ho riscontrato alcuni problemi con il firmware e con alcuni kernel che invertono le periferiche.
Una soluzione è stata di scaricare il firmware https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
l'altra di sweppare le pericheriche audio con asoundconf.rc.
