Hi, i'm a little bit new to SliTaz but not to Linux, i've been using Linux Slax and everything is good, but it is not as fast as SliTaz.
Well, my question is, how to make it work on my PC?
I mean, i burnt the ISO image on a CD (I'm using the RC2)
Put it on my PC, restarted it and the boot menu appeared. I choosed Slitaz Live, and it was loading, and suddenly, in and space like looking for the swap it stopped, after asking me for a loggin (i choosed tux and didn't work, so i tried root and stopped)
Went to another PC that isn't old. Put the CD, choose the same option and WORKED, In my old PC, i was trying other boot options, the only one that worked for me was the "SliTaz gtkonly Live"
But it doesn't have any program, and any configuration, NOTHING!
Well, i tried another Linux distro, called Unity Linux (Mandriva Based) _And it didn't worked, on the other computer IT DID!
Well, loking for some kind of problem, i THINK that is this: My computer autodetects my CD-ROM device as the primary SLAVE, so, it isn't /dev/sr0, or /dev/cdrom/, in Slax it appears to me like /dev/hdb, mounted like /mnt/hdb, instead of /mnt/sr0, like the other computer that i used. In Unity, one of the boot parameters says that root goes = root:/dev/sr0/:CDLABEL2001201012 Or something like that, but look, it says /dev/sr0, SR0!!, so i changed it to /dev/hdb, as Slax said, but it didn't worked! It says that it is a bad burn, but it worked in the other computer that (i think) doesn't detects my CD-ROM as primary slave, so i went to my BIOS menu, put where says "Primary Slave [auto]" and changed it to [none], so i thought that it was going to work, but it didn't even boot the image! It directly went to the HDD, but my boot parameter on the BIOS was CD first, HDD second! So i don't know how to make SliTaz work here, i'm typing this from Slax, the unity really doesn't matter for me, it was like another option to install.
Please, help me make my pc load SliTaz!
PD: My BIOS is like 2000, 'cuz the PC is designed for Windows ME, so in the BIOS options, i can't make it boot from an USB. Only CD or floppy are allowed, and yes, i have a floppy drive and some floppies. Thanks!

First:
try to use the RC4. The RC2 had some trouble to boot into a working screen. This is the most important goal for you now, as I understand you.
Using PloP it should be possible even on an old PC to boot from USB but my advice would be: install Slitaz to the harddrive and start to learn it from there. If you like it start to learn this USB business. In case you have trouble to install it keep in mind that the content of the CD must be in the directory /media/cdrom.
As you describe copy first /mnt/hdb/* to /media/cdrom/ - and then install.Posted 12 years ago # -
I'll try the RC4, but whre is it? I've only seen the RC3, PloP it? Is it a Windows or linux app? Well, my trouble is that i can't install SliTaz to the HDD, i WANT but it's like my father's PC and he doesn't let me format the HDD, Thanks, i'll try the RC4, and if doesn't works i'll try the Plop.

Here it is! Ok, burn it then.
No, PloP is neither Linux nor Windows, an independant boothelper/bootmanager program.
http://www.plop.at/de/bootmanager/index.html (in German; where are you from?)
- with it you can boot from USB even in case an old BIOS does not permit it.Posted 12 years ago # -
I tried the PloP, put it on a Floppy, it booted, but when i tried the option "usb" it said that no boot device were found, looking at my usb, it didn't have it's light on, tried again but in the setup i choosed force usb 1.1 mode 1, the problem was that it freezed when booting the syslinux, i put slitaz on the usb using Universal Booting from pendirvelinux.com, now i'm trying with YUMI, because i want to try the 3.0, the RC2 and the RC$ you provided me. If it doesn't works, i don't know what to do :O Because using Tazusb.exe wants to format my usb, and i have there installed some cool program, but if it doesn't works, i'll try with my other usb formatted in ext2 and fat32 (fat32=10M)(ext2=3.7Gb) So, i'll erase my changes of Slax, or i'll try to keep them aliva, dunno what.

I burnt the slitaz-rolling.iso with the link that you provided me, it loaded the boot screen, but it didn't boot Slitaz like the RC2!!! It only worked with Slitaz gtkonly Live and there it doesn't have any program!
The PloP also didn't worked!
What can i do?Posted 12 years ago # -
You're over-thinking this. Try booting the SliTaz CD normally (like you did in the start). It should bring you to a boot menu with several options. At the boot menu select the Command line option and press enter. It should take you to a terminal screen with the word
boot:
next to the cursor.Now type
core-basic lang=en_US kmap=en
and press enter. It should start booting SliTaz and skip the common places that might cause the boot process not to work.Posted 12 years ago # -
i know the reply is a little late,
but could you post your PC specs.
could it be hardware limitation.AFAIK, windows 2000 era pc has a ram of about 64mb.
(my first hand-me-down pc) ;p
and live-cd need like, 80mb i think.
unless of course, you are running a loram flavor
(correct me if im wrong, its been a long time) :)i think i use to have a 2004 laptop with ~90mb ram(128mb physically) xp laptop
so i assume WIN 2000/ME have lower ram.Posted 12 years ago # -
@Trixar_za, i'll try that and telll you if that works.
@milkboy, My PC is an Hp Pentium 3 with 256 MB of Ram, i'm running the RC2, and trying the RC3, but no one works.
Something that i forgot. When booting the boot option "SliTaz Live", it freezes at a screen that looks like looking for some Swap, and then it says something that there is no enough RAM, and kill a procces, i think that its ID is 619.
When i use it from another computer with 2GB of RAM, it works, could be that the RC2 needs too much RAM? Now i'm cooking the stable version and i'll try to boot it.Posted 12 years ago # -
I ran into same problem booting RC2 and RC3 with 256MB ram, celeron 400.mach64 graphics on board sharing ram. Swap doesn't help because ram runs out before swap is activated. I could boot into the cooking-core versions with memory to spare. The same hardware with another 256MB stick of ram for a total of 512MB boots RC2 or RC3 core ok.
The RC release core consumes more ram than the prior cooking versions because the rootfs.gz is larger.
You could try a rolling low-ram version or wait until an xorg-server-light version of core is released that uses less ram.Posted 12 years ago # -
So, my options are:
Wait for the 4.0 Stable
Or use the 3.0
I've burnt the 3.0 and going to try it now, or put it on a usb and boot with PloP, because i found that it works but it has RC2, so the RAM is the problem. Thanks everybody.Posted 12 years ago # -
It's not the RAM - It's a bug. I have a PIII with 256MB RAM and using the core-basic kmap=en lang=en_US method makes it boots fine.
Posted 12 years ago # -
I tried what you say, but it says thath the core-boot parameter doesn't exists, so i tried core basic kmap=en lang=en_US , was booting, and it stopped in the same place, where says that it doesn't have enough RAM, i made it to boot from 3.0, and everything worked, except my Wireless USB adapter, wich uses the rt2870sta and rt3070sta modules to work, SliTaz didn't booted them at the start, so i tried both modprobe to rt2870sta and rt3070sta, and they loaded. I unplugged my device, plugged it again, and nothing worked. Used tazhw detect-usb but nothing was detected, used the tazhw GUI and it said that that module wasn't loaded. But in the RC2 and RC3 when i booted them with justx and gtkonly, the modules were loaded. So, now i'm gonna try the ndiswrapper and the windows drivers,But i wanna ask you something, if there is another way to boot the RC2 wich low RAM, because the one that you gave me doesn't work. justx brings me to a console and doesn't work midori, and gtkonly too.

Forgot, i tried to use the loram and slitaz-loram cheatcodes at the SliTaz Live boot option, both failed.I downloaded the firmware rt2x00.tazpkg and installed it, the firmware binaries opened, and from the wireless conection, i installed them, nothing happened, unplugged the device and plugged it again, and nothing happened again, what am i doing wrong?
Resuming, i can boot from the 3.0 Stable, the RCs don't work. Too much RAM required or a bug. In 3.0 the problem is now that mi D-link DWA-125 usb wireless adapter doesn't work. Installed the tazpkg firmwares. Found the in /lib/firmware and there was the one i needed, rt2870sta, with some graphical wireless tool included, i installed the firmware, said that was going to scan, did it but nothing happened and my device din't light. Unplugged and plugged it and nothing works. Please, this is the only thing that i need to make SliTaz work, but i'm thinking that if the 4.0 Stable comes without 4 rootfs, just 1 as 3.0, i think that there won't be any problem booting, as in the RCs my driver was loaded, but i couldn't do anything, guess that i'll have to wait for 4.0, but they said that it was going to be released in two weeks since march 3d, and now is 26 and it hasn't been released, do you guess that it will be released soon? I need it.Posted 12 years ago # -
wow, most of the problems seems solve when i was sleeping.
;D lolz
since i dont have the wifi, i cant help you.
