Software Center

Hi all, I am thinking of starting a software center that groups applications so less experienced users have an easier time getting on their feet. I will have time to code this in a few weeks after college finals. Does anyone else think this is a good idea?Posted 13 years ago #

I was going to suggest something like synaptic package manager in debian, but I guess we already have the slitaz package manager that seems to work pretty well, though I have not been able to successfully use the search function. I put in a known package name and click Package/Description or Files, and nothing happens. Perhaps I am missing something. Anyway, a software center with grouped applications sounds like a good idea.

@Christian Sound like a cool idea and might make SliTaz a little easier for beginners.
@Merlin Because that function only searches descriptions of installed packages - for now anyway.
Another thing to look out for the is the up and coming tazpanel for SliTaz 4. It will replace the many of the graphical boxes that is currently used in SliTaz. The new interface will be way faster and alot more intuitive.

Thanks.

Hi,
@Christian I'm currently working on a rewrite og our current package center aka Tazpkgbox, we use now a CGI interface so SliTaz will be easely configurable from a remote host an via the web. If you woul like to join, clone tazpanel repo on Hg and send me a mail/PM to have Hg acces.
@Trixar_za, @Merlin The current Tazpkgbox let you search for packages name of course but also files or description. If the GUI is too slow and dont give the result you expected, please try the packages web interface at: http://pkgs.slitaz.org/

Maybe I don't understand the search function in the package manager. I assumed it was like the search function in synaptic package manager in debian. Whenever I try to find anything, it seems like it's not even working, looking, or searching. Thanks for the link to web package site, http://pkgs.slitaz.org. Most recently I was looking for the library file libjpeg.so.8 for use with tazweb in slitaz stable 3.0. I cannot find this package in the package manager for the stable distribution or at the web package site in either the stable or cooking repositories. Any further help is appreciated. Thanks.

Because the tazweb package uses newer library files that is available in SliTaz 3. Not that it's impossible to make it work. All you have to do is compile it over using SliTaz 3 libraries. I've already done this. I'll try to make a package later and post it here for you.

http://trixarian.za.net/downloads/tazweb-1.1-stable.tazpkg - I left in the address bar out of laziness, but if you want me to remove it, just ask.

Thank you, yes, I discovered this myself. I finally figured out how to find files in the web packages site. I found and downloaded and installed the file libjpeg.so.8. Tazweb then started in slitaz stable 3.0 but crashed when I clicked on Community at the slitaz web site. It complained of a missing spell checking file. So I found and downloaded and installed the missing spell checking file. Then, I forget, tazweb crashed looking for a gcc-lib-base file, so I found and downloaded and installed the gcc-lib-base components, but tazweb then would not run at all because additional components were still missing. And then, midori would not run either due to the same missing components. Adding the gcc-lib-base components did not fix tazweb and broke midori. So I rebooted into the latest cooking version of slitaz that I am using now. Thanks for recompiling tazweb to work with slitaz stable 3.0. I have not yet tried it as I am still using slitaz cooking. Compiling programs is a bit intimidating for me, too many options and variables. I think I've only compiled a single program in the past for another project. Anyway, thank you for making the recompiled taweb available for slitaz stable 3.0. I will try to try it later. Actually, leaving in the address bar seems like a good idea as there seemed to be no place in tazweb once it is running to input a new url. I am using the slitaz light web browser now. Is the slitaz light web browser the same as the cream browser?

Well, tazweb is primarily designed to read documentation and to be used with Tazpanel. Being able to use it as a web browser is secondary and by default it can get you to the SliTaz websites without any problems. It also has the ability to go to an URL specified in command line while starting it.
It does have a few pressing problems at the moment. For example, you can't download anything with it and this may also be the case with uploads. So all it is, is just a simple and small web and html documentation browser with basic functionality.
My own modifications came out of boredom and to see what I could get tazweb to do. So far all I achieved was to make it start maximized and with pankso's help get a working address bar going.

I think the tazweb browser is pretty interesting. What I like are its speed and simplicity. It seems to be a better light web browser for just viewing than links2 (though I still like links2 a lot) or dillo. I am still puzzled by the apparent similarity of the slitaz light web browser and tazweb. They seem somewhat similar. The cream browser that is also available in the cooking repository seems quite different and a little bit difficult to use. I look forward to further development of tazweb.
