Software rendering with nv driver

   I am running the nv driver with Slitaz 4. Everthing appears ok but I notced that currently it is using sofware rastersizer instead of hardware.

   glxinfo | grep render
   direct rendering: Yes
   OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
   GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_fragment_program

   Any suggestions as to what I need to do to get hardware rendering going? Thanks

   Not sure whether this was the best solution but installed nvidia non-free package and now I have rendering working OK.

   Would like to know whether there is a better way of doing this. Thanks

   Hi,

   It has been a while since I played with the Xorg nv driver, but I don't think it provides 3D hardware acceleration (and the Xorg wiki as at June 2012 seems to suggest that it's still the case http://www.x.org/wiki/nv )

   From casual reading, it seems that the Mesa Nouveau driver suite offers some level of 3D hardware acceleration for nvidia cards, depending on the card series, kernel, etc ( see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/MesaDrivers particularly the first and last sections on the page). You can find what family your card belongs to using the table at the top of the following webpage: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames

   Maybe the non-free (proprietary) driver from the manufacturer were the best bet for you, if you need 3D hardware acceleration.

   @pipein - thanks for the clarification and the links. I was a bit weary of using the non-free driver but so far it has behaved OK.

   Looks like the same bug as 3.0. You must recompile the kernel, get the installer from Nvidia's web site, run the Nvidia installer and try again. Sorry.

   This problem also occurs with the nvidia driver!

   rjarrrpcgp, my knowledge about this is limited but I am running nvidia non-free driver (Slitaz 4.0) and I get the following which I thought was confirmation that hardware acceleration is working?

   $ glxinfo | grep render
   direct rendering: Yes
   OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 7300 LE/PCI/SSE2
   GL_NVX_conditional_render, GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap, GL_SGIS_texture_lod,

   AFAIK, mesa nouveau driver had been updated to work with 6xxx and 7xxx series not long ago.
   So we need to rebuild it and users should use it instead of old nv driver.
