How do I mount my cdrom to hear if I have sound?

I have installed Slitaz 3.0 on an old Gateway solo 1250. I wanted to test to hear if I have sound...which I doubt. I tried "mount /dev/cdrom" and I get "mounting /dev/cdrom on media/cdrom failed: Invalid argument  So if I am using an incorrect command, and I am never sure with each distro, can someone tell me the correct mount command for mounting the cdrom?

Depends on CD format:

Audiocds are not mounted.

alsaplayer/Play CD button

Data CD's containing files/folders are mounted.

#mount /dev/cdrom

Mounts a data cd to /media/cdrom on my computer.

Tried alsaplayer and to my surprise after I logged in as root the cd light flashes and the disc spins. No sound though. Alsamixer is messed up. Can't adjust volumes...no little boxes under the bars. Also no desktop background just a mottled gray thing. This has to be a bad install of the distro. Nothing new I have been fighting with Linux since Mandrake 10. Still the same old problems persist. Hardware compatibility, lack of dependencies etc.

Try this:

cat filename.wav > /dev/audio

And if you don't have any wavs and too lazy to get one, anyfile type should work, but all you'll hear is static.
