Hi, I know this question has been asked before. I have looked in to many similar threads, but the solution is eluding me.
I have downloaded slitaz-4.0.iso live and burned to cd. I have tried it out in my Toshiba satellite and it opens up nicely. The thing is, that I would like to use it in an older laptop, Toshiba Tecra 8000.
Here we run into problems as the only thing that opens up is the so called, busybox (I think).
At this point I have come so far that I have managed to:
root@slitaz:/home/tux# /etc/init.d/slim start (Press Enter)
it gives
Starting Slim login manager: Slim... OK
At this point I dont know what to expect,but pressing Enter will give me just another line in the busybox.
I am not familiar with Linux at all, so if you think that burning another cd with slitaz-3.0.iso, will solve it, I might try that.

A search for the Toshiba Tecra 8000-specs turns out that you might have
only 128mb ram, which is not enough.

Let me rephrase the question.
What is the difference between
slitaz-4.0-loram.iso
and
slitaz-4.0-loram-cdrom.iso

slitaz-4.0-loram-cdrom.iso -> CDrom needs to remain in the reader; for really low memory system.
With 128MB, slitaz-4.0-loram.iso should work; it'll be slower than the stable version because a part of the file system is still compressed in RAM.

Now I have booted slitaz-4.0-loram.iso, but that did not do it. I am back in the box.

Could not find vertical bar (pipe), on my Tecra, so I used broken pipe. Anyway

get root - then
tazx
Choose:
neomagic
After neomagic driver download/install is finished,get user again with exit
start Xorg login manager:
slim

gives dialog, Configure X, I can choose 3 options
xorg Install or reconfigure xorg
xfbdev Install TinyX server xfbdev
quit Quit tazx utility

I think, you are right - I remember something, that you cannot install something on the lowram iso.
I see 3 possibilities
1) you borrow 256 MB of Ram
2) you install Slitaz to harddisk, from the box - this is possible - afterwards you can run tazx
3) somebody makes a lowramiso with tazlito, with all the neomagic packages - this can be also done with pizza
just as an example - http://pizza.slitaz.me/?id=20130911-13188 - this is also a lowram iso

Strange, I ran SliTaz 4.0 loram in frugal mode and launched tazx.
It has worked correctly and I can install a video driver without any problem.
The only case I have no list and only the choice between to [c]quit [/c] and [c]Quitter [/c]is when I boot without any ethernet connection.
Well, you are using the loram ISO, not the loram-cdrom ISO?

I am quite sure that I used the right iso,"SliTaz 4.0 loram.iso" even though I had all 3 of them in the same directory at the time.
The Splash screen tells me: SliTaz GNU/Linux - 4.0 20120410
I can choose to boot from:
Live
Core Live
gtkonly Live
justx Live
base Live
Which one is frugal?

I have my doubts about this.
but so far I have burned 2 discs.
I for sure downloaded:
SliTaz GNU/Linux 4.0 (35 Mb) - slitaz-4.0.iso
While checking out this Live cd from Windows at properties it says SliTaz core-4in1 and it occupies 36 419 584 byte on the disc.
As I see it I also downloaded slitaz-4.0-loram.iso and properties says SliTaz LiveCD and it occupies 42 131 456 byte on the disc.
If this really is slitaz-4.0-loram.iso, we dont know for sure at the time, but downloading it again, will probably settle it.
By the way, when I boot from Windows I have Internet acces, wireless from router. But not while booting from SliTaz.

Depending on your computer's specs:- lowram or (to run from CD) lowram-cdrom
If you are intending to install to disk, it sounds like you may need to create a swap partition first, before trying to install, & when installed, add in the neomagic graphics driver to get the GUI. (Likely need to reboot)

At least if you compare the date, 2012-Apr-10 with the date that appears on the splash screen.
I certainly would like to see at least a graphical desktop from the live cd, before I wipe the computer clean and installs something.

As kultex, I woulld have give my shirt that slitaz-4.0-loram.iso was a single rootfs ISO. I download the ISO and mount it and... it is a multi-rootfs image. So you probably you use the good version. To be sure, open /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg in your CDrom and check line #33 is
[c]append 102416 core 114404 gtkonly 69740 justx 39200 base noram[/c]
In 4-in-1 it is
[c]append 192M core 160M gtkonly 100M justx 48M base noram[/c]
Which one is frugal?
Frugal mode is a way similar to Live to run SliTaz but kernel and the 4 rootfs#.gz are installed on the HDm not on a CDrom.
Try this:
[*]boot from your Live
[*]when menu displays, go down on Core Live and hit the [Tab] key
[*]add at the end of the command line that is displayed
[c]nomodeset screen=text[/c]
[*]hit [Enter]
[*]login as tux and type [c]startx[/c][c][/c]
Is there an error message?
By the way, when I boot from Windows I have Internet acces, wireless from router. But not while booting from SliTaz.
If you don't have access to internet then it's normal you cannot run tazx.

Is it normal that in the loram ISO we need less memory (102416) to run Core that to run gtkonly (114404) ?

@ ceel - its 4 in 1 - so for core you load all 4 compressed parts
I tried this morning to make a pizza iso http://pizza.slitaz.me/?id=20140424-3957, but I did something went wrong with lowram - never tried a lowram before
Maybe you have time to try to make the lowram flavor - because with his situation, its quite hard - no internet+ so less rams

There were only 2 lines, when I opened isolinux.cfg in notepad. but I found:
append 102416 core 114404 gtkonly 69740 justx 39200 base noram.
As for the error message, I would better upload an image.
There is no urgency to make pizzaz in the middle of the night though. I will be offline, internetwise for the next couple of days.
