nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

Wonder if it really needs to be as difficult in 21st century to install a simple nVidia driver (to get 8400GS working)?

Followed docs http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:nvidia

it all went great, till reboot when I get this:

http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/968/grey-screen-with-x-pointer-on-startups/p1

Slitaz 3.0 Stable on USB stick installed with UNetbootin

The simplest solution was... to ditch Slitaz & use Fatdog64, which works perfectly and has forum with replies...

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

You willing chose to use SliTaz while not having to pay the developers or the community members that help out at these forums a cent to use it. This means we owe you exactly nothing. We provide support because we want to. Coming on with the "I, teh Windows N00b, Demandz" attitude tends to get you ignored. It's alright for Windows since you paid for it (we hope). Not so much with something community driven you didn't pay for.

You're also bitching at the wrong people. Nvidia and ATI decided it should make people pay to include their drivers with a distribution. So unless you want to shell out the license fee for it (which I highly doubt) with every download of SliTaz, we won't be including them any time soon. This is the reason it's 'so hard'. Also another pretty nice thing that Nvidia and ATI does quite regularly is drop support for certain cards while restricting said drivers to a certain Kernel version or higher. This nicely breaks support for older cards when used with newer Linux versions and makes it impossible to use the newer drivers with an older kernel version.

Maybe you should go bitch them out instead?

As to why I'm a Moderator, I don't know. Maybe because I'm helpful. I don't however have patience with some people. Ask nicely and I help nicely. Ask meanly or sarcastically and I respond similarly. Just my general rule.

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

Excuses, excuses...

But you did not even reply to a question (and NOT a DEMAND)

I did NOT ask for build-in driver (you gave an explanation why it is not there)

I followed docs which use the latest nVidia provided driver (should I bitch at them for providing the driver?)

The card in question IS supported by this driver, so I see no reason why it should not work in Slitaz

"You willing chose to use SliTaz while not having to pay the developers..."

Yes, I do, but I would also (as a normal user) expect the product to be usable

What is the point otherwise providing it at all? (like ie. radio with no FM reception, would you want one?)

I would classify full resolution display as a "usable" part of a product, don't you agree?

Your attitude is one of the reasons Linux can not really compete on a desktop for long time yet

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

I really do it when people say stuff like "____ is the reason why Linux will never be great", "____ is why linux will never compete on the desktop" or even "____ is why Linux will never have a market share". The trouble is you've completely and utterly missed the point.

Linux doesn't care about market shares or competing on the desktop market. It doesn't care about being great or about about beating Windows. It doesn't care about living up to people's skewed idea of user friendly. The point of Linux is to provide something for free (as in choice) that you can be modify to your needs, shared with whomever you want or even sold if you so please. It's not perfect and never will be. It's up to YOU to shape it like you want it to be. That's the point. Want to read more on it? Check out http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm for my complete argument.

Also following your logic that nothing should be released until it's 'usable' or 'prefect' would mean that there wouldn't be any software, computers, machines and operating systems in the world. You see what they have in common is that /they developed over time/. All human invention works like this. We had to figure out the wheel and fire by trail and error. Most programs start out like this by basic and buggy first. They then get more advanced as people use it and make suggestions. Windows, MacOs and Linux distributions like Ubuntu had to go through this to get where they are today. In fact, here's a link talking about exactly why your mentality produces inferior products or no products at all: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/08/quantity-always-trumps-quality.html

Now that I crushed your arguments; let me address you. It's people like you that kill off Free Software development. You have this fucked up sense of entitlement that you haven't earned. You complain and complain while refusing to get off your lazy asses to do anything or worth or merit to contribute. This pretty much kills the motivation for free software makers to continue working on the piece of software since your kind sucks out all the fun in it. It's people with my attitudes that actually does stuff and I've got a pretty thick skin from being around your kind so long. I have a saying that pretty much sums up my philosophy: "If you don't like it, do it better." - Note how I don't say complain about it, but DO something about it. This is how http://www.trixarian.net/SliTaz came into existence. I wanted emulators, so I did something about it.

Also, I don't have to be nice to you. I don't have to help you. I don't have to do anything for you unless you paid me. I help out here because I want to. Get what I'm saying? You're not entitled to a goddamn thing from me or anybody on this forum. Treat us with respect and we'll treat you with respect. Go off on us and I will go off on you. It's just common courtesy.

Men... you have some serious issues. I do not know what they are, but please do seek help while you can.

How can somebody (assuming young) be so full of rage towards an unknown stranger

It seems that something existing only in your mind can set you off, as I see nothing in my original question (should it be so difficult?) that was disrespectful ?

Do not take the issue deeply personal, one day it will eat you from inside!

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

@sebus

I just had a similar experience like yours on some machine. It was not possible to install the proprietary nvidia driver there. Following their advice I installed quite some package more than those that a slitaz cooking CD provided - it did not help.

But I draw different consequences out of that. I do not blame Slitaz or Linux, I put the blame on nvidia for not delivering necessary informations. Imagine that: you buy a product from a manufacturer and then this firm claims additional (!) money from you for trying to use that product. With Microsoft or Apple it is the same: you just do not notice it as it is incorporated in the price that you pay for Windows 7 or some Apple PC. It is not the Linux world that inhabits this madhouse.

My result? I use Sitaz cooking with a less good driver. It does not make me ill.

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

You know what?

Here's your choices: Either install the package provided in the repository (nvidia-190.42_2.6.30.6) or use one of the packages found @ http://people.slitaz.org/~jozee/packages/

I do recommend running tazx from the terminal as root while online first. Select nv to configure your xorg.conf correctly. Then install the package from the repository or from jozee's packages using tazpkg install. Compiling and installing the newest Nvidia drivers won't work because support for SliTaz 3's Linux kernel version has been dropped. Yet again, thank or blame Nvidia for that.

Also I'm 27. I'm not angry right now, but I do tend to tell people what I think. I also tend to give people back what they give us. If you searched the forum before posting your original post you would have noticed I've answered this question before and so have others.

Yes, eventual search brings your own (calm) reply:

And yes, I have tried all I can think of, yet I can not get graphics working either with repo or jozee packages

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

Then your only choice is to move to a copy of SliTaz with a newer kernel (and nvidia drivers). I hear godane's slitaz-tank is pretty up to date. Maybe give that a go.

Tried slitaz-tank on nVidia 6150 & works great, but on my 8400 GS it gives only No Signal

Losing hope to get it working at all

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

Hello, the repo driver installation, at least with the officially released 3.0, is broken, X.Org will keep using software rasterizer. Dependencies appear to be broken!

X.Org will not work correctly with Nvidia, if you don't compile a kernel and use Nvidia's installer!

You're required to compile a kernel and grab Nvidia's installer:

Re: nVidia 290.10 install - should it be so difficult?

I suggest you get a Nvidia driver version from 2010, because when I last did that was in summer, 2010 and it was fine.

2012 versions appear to have killed support for the kernel SliTaz 3 uses.

@rjarrrpcgp have you tried SliTaz 4 RC3 or the rolling version? It should come with the nvidia driver now.
