teensy hard drive won't boot

I have a 270M hard drive.  (are you done laughing? A whole Mac ran on this long ago.)  And 512M RAM.

I was able to install 4.0 from the live cd onto the hard drive.  I made 1 partition and there's 105M left.

(5.x live cd graphics were a strip of pixellated colors at the top of the sceen, but that's for another thread)

The machine boots from the live CD and from a usb stick I made, but not from the 270M hard drive.

I can see that there are appropriate-looking files written on the hard drive, I can write a text file and save it on the drive.

So why won't my teensy hard drive boot up?

continued saga:

I have an IDE->USB adaptor; I plugged the Quantum Maverick 270M drive into my Mac - it sees it, so I formatted to Fat.

Then I plugged into a Windows NT machine, it saw it and could write to it.

WIN machine didn't see my SliTaz 4.0 USB - it wanted to format it (I guess NT doesn't see the SliTaz formatting.)

So I put in the SliTaz 4.0 Live CD, booted from it and installed on the 270M.

When I reboot I get the same error 15, drive not recognized.

And when I reboot into NT, it sees the drive as unformatted G drive, no size is given.

I don't know enough to go any further.  The drive is OK, the problem may not have anything to do with its size.

When I loaded Slitaz 5.0rc2 I almost missed a tick box that said load GRUB or similar.

GRUB is the boot loader and will be needed for an HDD install.  Was there a similar selection for version 4?

Sorry to hear it didn't work.  I'm quite new to Slitaz so I'm afraid I don't have any more suggestions for version 4.

Did the version 5 pixel problem occur after installing to hdd? Or didn't you get that far?

I had similar issues with some hardware on a PXE boot build I did.  I found all the optional xorg files and added them to my build. 

But if you can't see the live cd boot desktop that might be difficult ...

Yeah, I never got to the GUI on version 5.

I figured the older version would work on older equipment.

It's hard to find ATA drives anymore so I hoped this drive would be useful for something.

I doubt that is anything to do with the size of the drive. SliTaz 4.0 uses something like 170mb for an installation. Maybe re format the drive as fat32 & try again, or, for more usable space for your data, do a frugal install.

Take the HDD and set the jumper to Master

connect the Hdd with a 40pin ide cable into your PC

go into the bios and make a Hdd auto-detect.

If the drive is being recognized this should show you some CHS values

(CHS = cylinder/head/sector), if so, save this settings and exit the bios.

boot the slitaz4 live-CD, format the drive (Gparted) and install slitaz.

when done, open a terminal, su to root, type fdisk-l and check if the boot flag

has been set...reboot
