I had installed the latest nvidia-driver package 173.14.31_3.2.53 NVIDIA drivers (non-free). Then I blacklisted nouveau. Rebooting: the nvidia driver was in use,nouveau not. But it did not work, black screen and this message in Xorg.0.log:

With nouveau the card works, resolution is ok, 1280x1024.
What does this mean in human understandable terms? ;-)

The proprietary drivers most likely don't work in SliTaz, and I would stay away from them anyway. If you want to play a lot of games, SliTaz most likely isn't the platform to do it anyway.

I agree - in parts! To try such a driver is not necessary, just kind of sport. Most likely these drivers normally work, with Slitaz 4.0, Kernel 2.6.27 it works on this particular PC. So one should fix it, though it might not be the hottest issue to be solved.

It is possible that the repository has an old version of said driver, and as such it would probably be a good idea to test if a more recent driver will work with the Xorg ABI 12.1. I am not sure though.

Yes, therefore I posted this error report here. Normally an offered piece should work, therefore. But it is not a big issue.

Why you need proprietary driver. 'nouveau' works fine even with compiz.
Note that kernel module 'nouveau'(preinstalled) and xorg-nouveau (from repo) are two different drivers.

No, I do not need it at all, at least not with 5.0. It was a little proof of performance for a Newbie who still hangs on Windows! ;-)
That is a different world. In order to find the necessary details for another Pc, an old Dell Laptop, it was recommended to me to use a new „Nvidia Research Tool“ for GeForce Cards. 25 MB download, an exe.installer. It started whithout my permission the download of a „Microsoft Net Environment“, that took ca. 500 MB space - and finally the installation of the Nvidia program failed with a non-usable error message. Under Windows I found out that their driver is from 2004. Any reason to escape from such an environment.
In which respect are these 2 nouveau-drivers different? Important for the user?

This driver provides full resolutions list in 'Monitor settings', faster browser-scrolling and accelerated movie playback.

Yes, thank you, I have seen it. Of course this driver works, but I explained why I tried it nevertheless with the proprietary driver. Sports, only for sports! ;-)
