Hi all,
I had a look around. To establish a latex program to slitaz seems possible - not as a feared that it would be simply too large. Sometimes progress in the Free Software World has a kind of frightened speed.
But it would need the help of apted people to get the ready editors run on slitaz:

This I downloaded and followed the README. But unfortunately it does not run on my slitaz cooking-installation. The console output plus the ldd - report is in the attached file ,,report.texmaker.txt".
(When trying to upload it I got a [denied mime]-error message though the file is in *.txt-format. So I have to paste these outputs below, sorry)
Anybody here who would be able to create a running tazpkg-package out of one of those?
Motivation: TeX is called the best software made ever. The computer scientist Donald Knuth developed it. He was so proud that he promised a reward of ... $ for anybody who would be able to find a mistake in it. Since many years nobody succeeded in finding one. All professional people use LaTeX for profession layouts.
In any school or university environment it is a didactically very nice application as one is forced to structure ones mind as the process of creating a *.ps-, *.dvi- or *.pdf-output is very transparent. It can be done even with the command line only.

0) yeap, I totally agreed with you, Latex is a MUST and should be available for Slitaz,
1) there is a package "get-texlive" available for Slitaz, but it does not work... I did not look deeper, but maybe it is simple to correct it.

Hu, French I do not understand more than just to buy some bread in France! Sorry!
The texlive-2011 functions apparently, yesterday I stopped my download realizing that it would be a really huge thing.
Until now, within 24 h, I see the following solution:
- one needs a running slitaz tazpkg-package of texmaker or TeXstudio
- this needs a latex-,,Basis" of about 150 MB which one can get at
http://download2.berlios.de/portablelatex/pl-0.2.tgzhttp://download2.berlios.de/portablelatex/pl-0.2.tgz
Then it should run.
Under other established Linux-Distributions LaTeX is not a big thing, as it is incorporated anyway. There is this portable version mentioned above that runs on a modern Mandriva with ease (glibc must be at least 2.9 or higher). The basis of it is ,,texmf", which sits in /usr/share and has about 120 MB.
Too big for any ,,normal" slitaz version, like LibreOffice too, but nothing against MS Office with more than 600 MB. The whole, complete texlive-2011 comes on a DVD! But to be fair: this is a complete professional system set.
My dream is something much more handy, but good enough for students and pupils - and incorporated in Slitaz.
A Slax-based Live-CD from end of 2009, developed at the University of Rome, is available and tonight I will check it (and report here).
In my opinion an ,,App" (a platform-independant .iso-file) is the best form for such a software.

Just tested 1 hour ago to install Texlive. It took 45 minutes but really smooth. :-)

The slax-based latex-CD I just checked out. 350 MB total, the complete iso. Uses 444 MB RAM when booted, so it runs in the RAM.
This is pure academic bone-dry stuff. One browser: links! One needs one week extra for getting trained on it. The quickest thing I know, admittedly, but not the way any ,,normal" (below 150% nerd content) person would like to use a browser. At a university I could may be tell them: come back when you master that! In a school they would just laugh. Hopeless!
Anyway: it means that it is possible to have a latex-environment on a Live-CD. The concept of Slitaz is quite more slim than Slax which has a KDE 3.5.1-basis normally.
I did not yet try the texlive-2011-version on Slitaz. The installer install-tl-unx.tar.gz-package worked fine but I am not sure whether the space here is enough for this complete thing. Plus: I question that it makes sense to install it. I would prefer to have it as an additional on-its-own-package.

Once again, I agree with you that a Tex package would be really nice. But I am not able to do it...

Here I had stopped it when it amounted to about 550 MB.

In the meantime I had to look to this:

I decompressed it and mounted it to /mnt/loop. It is 259 MB but in that there is a /usr/l/usr/lib/jre1.6.0_05/ib/jre1.6.0_05/ - installation of 97 MB.
/usr/share/texmf is 120 MB. The complete content is in the attached txt-file ,,inhalt.txt".
Sorry because of this mime-problem the attachment does not work. Anyway, it is the texmf-basis plus java and some extras.

This is what I was frightened of. Too big, too complete, like this slax-based Live-CD purely academic full stuff. Smaller, but of the same character, is this portablelatex mentioned above. Not useful for even the most elevated school kids.

Yes, I did not give up and installed lyx in cooking - with a big bunch of dependancies: qt, python, perl and and an.
But it does not install any noticeable texmf-basis. At least I could not find any. So after 1 day of trial, error and research a handy package-in-its-own for latexmaker or TeXstudio with it basis is a dream not yet realized.
I write ,,not yet" on purpose. You had asked in September 2010 for Lyx, but not we are 1 1/2 years older, surfing on the wave of progress and success with Slitaz, don't we, guys?

As cited above you want lyx in slitaz - and you got it. What are your experinces with it? I ask because I had thought that lyx needs a latex basis in a distribution. But slitaz does not have one. So I installed lyx and tried it with a classical application, the German dinbrief.layout. Here is the console output:

LyX will not be able to produce output.
That means: LyX is crippled, does not work - as the basis is missing.

Yes, that's true you need latex if you want to use Lyx.
I use Lyx for a long time. I use it to make all my documents. I did not try Lyx standalone. I mean, first I installed texlive (as described previously) and a then I installed Lyx.

Actually I have to stop the idea to get latex running by converting debian-packages to slitaz ones. I run simply into too many dependancies that I cannot resolve. This way won't bring the idea further, at least not with my skills. The converted tazpkg-packages I can keep for a while but this way makes no sense.

Now we have Lyx in slitaz-cooking, but though it has a lot of dependancies it is like a car without a motor. The motor would be a TeX/LaTeX-package-in-its-own. This is at least 120-130 MB. For using it with a normal brain one needs an editor, like texmaker, so let us assume about 140 MB.
Just the installation of LyX with its dependancies increases Slitaz cooking from 120 to 363 MB. Add then 140 MB.
Therefore my idea to get that libe LibreOffice as ,,AppRun". But, unfortunately, this is beyond my skills.
But you are right: it is the ticket into the academic world, an incredible text processing system. All advanced math teachers use it; Microsoft did not manage it in so many years to come at par with it.

Yes, this is quite close to TeX/LaTeX and has a similar ,,philosophy". Some tools like dvi seem to be the same as well.

There has to be a lighter implementation of TeX. I doubt people would have downloaded something so huge in the early days of the internet... or has it become like emacs which slowly grew huge over time?

Yes, there are such lighter implementations. I mentioned some. They are about 120-130 MB, but unfortunately ,,incorporated" into some other ,,frames", like the mentioned SLAX Live-CD, which contains nothing else than a kind of (ligt) texlive and jre 1.6. It is called pl.0.2, the URL is above, and was made at the university of Rome.
TeX is a system much bigger than emacs - I mean it may be enlarged to such huge sizes.
