How to use my pc mainly in CLI?

Hi

IU want to try to use my pc mainly in CLI (command line) completely without some graphic mode.

I the past, SliTaz did offer a great lot of applications adequate to do so: retawq, or links, clex, rhapsody etc.

And I know more app's for such usage (esp. wordgrinder, see at sourceforge).

As I did do that, I did see that they are to kind of app's :

- such cleaning the screen by start or living the app.

- such preserving the precedent content of the screen or letting it on the screen.

Le last ones are of course very interesting in all cases where you will use continue to use the content. If it is only a text, no problem, a "cat" is enough to see it on the screen, mark it and use it in the next commando line. If it is an info you did read on the IRC channel and the screen did be erased at the end, you have to write the text on a paper where mark + click middle mouse key would have done!

probably they are on this SliTaz forum yet a little number of experts in CLI working?

which app's can you recommend being really performant working only in CLI (not in the little windows of console!)?

Hi,

I wouldn't want to call myself an expert but I do operate a slitaz box from the command line.

However, this is not a workstation but a server for my ebook library.

Many things regarding the maintenance of this library are done from the cli.

I wrote a set of shell/perl scripts to help me with this.

For regular work, I do not think this is the way to go. Especially when you want or need to browse the Internet, this does not work well from the CLI. When you are doing development work (like when I built my ebook server), all you need is vi or a comparable editor. There are many cli-tools in slitaz which come in handy too.

So I think you can only work from cli exclusively when that is where your main activities are. For my ebook project, I also had to build a set of HTML pages. Most of this work was accomplished using PSpad, a great (free) text editor for windows but perhaps available for linux too. Otherwise, the best you can do is mix the two together. Use CLI where you can and GUI where you have to, or where it is simply more convenient.

Thank you for your informations. Vi is not the lovely editor of SliTaz's guy's but it is present in the base of slitaz (as well as nano, the SliTaz developer's editor; I prefer Vi as you!).

And SliTaz is also available as flavour «base» only. It is a really extreme little flavour: ISO is under 10 MByte!

After start, login with passwd "root" as superuser "root" and begin to fat your tiny new system (only 43 package in vers. 4.0)

[c]tazpkg recharge # actualizes the list
tazpkg update # proposes all actually updates
tazpkg get-install clex # little tree manager and app starter using the copy fonction F2 (quit with shift Q)
tazpkg get-install retawq # internet browser (the doc is on the site of retawq)
tazpkg get-install rhapsody # IRC client
tazpkg get-install sc # spread sheet[/c]
(I am sorry but no wordgrinder, text processor, and no didiwiki, personal wiki and notice book, as both can write smart texts! but links is available if you prefer links).

A good place to learn about all sorts of console applications is K.Mandla's Inconsolation blog. He (she?) has tried out and commented on hundreds of them. Unfortunately the articles are indexed alphabetically by program name, so it's impossible to browse through the applications by function. Still, I find this a very interesting and useful blog.
