Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Hello! First post in the forum.

Tried cooking in 2 laptops. A dual core fujitsu amilo (nvidia 9300m gs recognized) and old fujitsu liteline (PIII 128 mb ram and lyn3d graphics).

Booted and installed in dual core already running Slitaz 3.0 with nvidia non-free, as i couldn't get fullscreen with smplayer or vlc with free driver.

I can't get nvidia driver working, only get black screen. Vesa driver works, but no fullscreen for media players. Also tried devel iso and couldn't boot in grapical mode, only text. Installing xorg-server (full) and nvidia free driver doesn't work, tried tazx and tazhw setup nvidia. Had to blacklist nouveau in order to boot in graphical mode.

Now the older laptop. Slitaz 3.0 installed and running, only 800x600 resolution with vesa. I think to remember Slitaz 2 worked in fullscreen wth xvesa, but it doesn't work with xorg. Well, if I boot slitaz justx only get a black screen.

Can boot slitaz base, but it won't connect to internet. I only can bring up ethernet connection and ping my router (Slitaz 3 works fine with an ethernet pcmcia card and pcmcia rt61 wifi card). It is the same router for both laptops, so I know it works.

Sorry for the bad news and thank you for your efforts!

Working well from Live CD on an old Compaq Presario C300 - intel Celeron 1.4GHz, intel graphics, 768MB RAM.  About to try the release on USB/SD stick.  Thank you!

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

I must be doing something wrong with Tazusb...

Both the live CD and the downloaded  'slitaz-4.0-RC1.iso'   file have been tried as sources, both of them checked OK with MD5sum.

But both of them fail after :

[c]Copying needed files from CDROM    ...     [OK]
Installing bootloader: syslinux[/c]
The error messages:

[c]cp: can't stat '/media/cdrom/boot/isolinux/isolinux.msg' : No such file or directory
sed: '/media/flash/boot/syslinux/syslinux.msg': No such file or directory
cp: can't stat '/media/cdrom/boot/isolinux/splash.lss': No such file or directiory
sed: '/media/flash/boot/syslinux/syslinux.msg': No such file or directory
======================================================
Do you want to exit Tazusb or reboot system (Exit/reboot) ?[/c]
I checked; there is indeed no 'isolinux.msg' at that location on the CDROM.

Interestingly, the messages are the same regardless of whether the .iso image or the CDROM are selected as source.

Best regards, Ben

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Hello everybody,

A new SliTaz is always pleasant news :-)

Yet, the new SliTaz 4RC1 simply doesn't boot on my PII 400Mhz 256MB Ram whereas I have been using SliTaz 3 for a while and even cooking booted fine. I have SliTaz 3 installed on that comp.

SliTaz 4RC1 stops midway on a screen that ends with a pid grid and the following lines:

Out of memory: Kill process 661 (getty) score 1 or sacrifice child

Killed process 661 (getty) total-vm:2304kb, anon-rss:60kb, file-rss:448kb

It is stuck there and I can only switch off. Did I miss the new requirements? I also tried to boot with Live core, to the same effect.

On an AthlonXP, Slitaz boots fine.

Cheers

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

It's an issue with RC1 - Try running [c]core-basic kmap=us lang=en_US[/c] from the boot menu's command line interface. It should boot without issues.

I have the same issue on my PIII 950Mhz 256MB RAM PC. Maybe it's related to 256MB RAM or less.

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Still working well on assorted Intel Celeron hardware from live CD boot, but no luck with getting a USB stick to boot (even after using dd rather than TazUSB) so cannot easily try the netbooks and nettops.

Will dig out the portable DVD drive we have somewhere and try that.

Well done the devs, and thanks again.  Ben

Hello!

New package nvidia-173xx-173.14.31_2.6.37 works fine now in my laptop. Smplayer can play fullscreen without trouble. Thank you very much!

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Many thanks Trixar_za, for your useful tip: I also tried [c]core-basic kmap=fr lang=en_US[/c] and SliTaz booted fine.

I'll have a look at the fr_FR in a while. The 2011 cooking was far from perfect in the FR locale.

As much as I really appreciate SliTaz and its clever use of Openbox and bits of LXDE (a far cry from the whole LXDE) I'd like to grumble a bit ;-) about this hurdle for old computers. SliTaz is certainly great on faster computers than a PII with 256MB RAM but we need SliTaz to work out of the box on old computers. 256MB as two 128MB sticks on the two slots is quite an improvement on the original single 64MB stick and we have trouble here finding compatible 256MB sticks.

We have a few old computers that we have refurbished as sensibly as possible. They refuse to break down, and it seems a pity to dump them to the recycling bin just because they're quite out of fashion and obsolete.

Of course, I'm well aware nobody wants computers that are are unable to display a streaming webM video but we should be able to watch the video after downloading it.

I have a question: while booting, SliTaz gets an ethernet lease alright and the connection box says it is connected but ifconfig shows errors and Midori displays a connection error page.

At the moment, I have a simple DSL modem and no router.

I can't even connect to the modem.

The connection works fine on another computer running on Trisquel 5 (Gnome) and I can connect to the modem. I thought the modem was flaky, which may be possible but at the moment it's working fine with Triquel.

What can I do?

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

@Flymo

Check out the bootloader PloP. With it one should be able to boot from USB even on an old computer that normally does not admit that.

It is a kind of primary bootloader that boots first and then lets you decide from where you want to boot: some harddrive (should contain grub) or some USB (grub must be there).

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

@michaelbischof - thank you for the suggestion.

Plop looks like a useful tool - for those interested in it there is a mode summary here:- http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/startmodes.html

Not sure if that will help our present situation.  With a TazUSB-created  USB stick we are still  seeing the initial boot startup messages (like the Live CD), then those error messages detailed above.

The BIOS is finding the USB stick OK, the boot process is starting, then we get the error messages that are reporting missing items. Either the items are needed (and missing) or the TazUSB config script is asking for something that may not be appropriate to this rev.  Beyond my present understanding, either way!

I've tried Unetbootin  as well as using dd to create the USB stick, both with no success so far.

The good news is that we have found our USB CD drive and can carry on testing SliTaz with that.

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

So I'm posting using Slitaz-4-0-rc1 running inside VirtualBox in Windows Vista, first boot I had the kernel memory error, I used the boot command codes:

core-basic kmap=us  lang=en_US

It looks like it's running at 800x600 though ...

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

just tried 4.0, some comments.

by chance i could easily go back to the previous interface, not a big fan of the changes which i understand have been on the way for a while.

Saw the web interface, nice for package installation, not so nice for wifi (compared to the interface that was available with 3.0). would prefer a button to run the previous interface rather than editing a file !

Wifi VERY unstable, constantly disconnecting, which makes it viruatlly unusable here.

I do have some unstability with 3.0 but not at this scale...

I found what is below, without being sure this is useful (When the network seems to be disconnect i have to disconnect then reconnect)

Thanks

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Installed RC2, all goes well and able to burn CD isos and liveUSB but while wireless on my eeePC701 RTL8187sle worked ok on RC1, I couldn't get it going on RC2.

It finds it and I can put in my key but it only sends, doesn't receive. Any hints happily accepted.

PS........... 4RC2 looks sophisticated and very professional

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

I think my issue with wireless is that I need to install ipw2200 firmware and a orinico_cs module.  Slitaz 3.0 allows me to do that, but RC1 doesn't appear to have that option.

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

I think my issue with ethernet connection is that Slitaz sees my comp as 192.168.0.2 while in fact it should be 192.168.1.2 since the gateway is 192.168.1.1

Editing the file is to no avail since with the Live-CD there's no point logging out or rebooting to enable changes.

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

@eeried

Come on: then just make a small frugal hdd-install on some ext3-partition. Edit the rcS-file, as far as I understand it, and set the details right. I vaguely remember I had a similar issure one year before, but this machine I do not have here.

The procedure: boot with the CD, copy the content of the CD to the hard-drive directory, name it ,,slitaz". Then set up the right details while you are booted. Then use ,,tazusb writefs". After that you delete the rootfs.gz-file in ,,slitaz" and replace it with /rootfs.gz.

Add the right GRUB config expression into the menu.lst of /boot/grub:

root (hd0,1) - or what you have

kernel /slitaz/boot/bzImage root=/dev/ram0 rw nomodeset

initrd /slitaz/boot/rootfs.gz

boot

If there is a problem when you use it look into /var/log/messages.

Re: SliTaz 4.0-RC1 - Feedback

Hello!

eeried, you don't need to log out or reboot to enable changes. Just edit /etc/network.conf (with nano or leafpad) and then "/etc/init.d/network.sh restart". That should work.

Hope it helps!
