Unable to open display after install to HDD, live cd was working!

I downloaded the 4.0 RC1 live CD, which booted at the command prompt. By running tazx, then choosing nv, I could start the desktop with /etc/init.d/slim start. So I thought I was save and proceeded by installing slitaz to my harddisk of my laptop (P4/2.8Ghz/512MB).

Now slitaz also starts with the linux shell. Now when I use tazx to select NV, and then use /etc/init.d/slim start it says "Starting slim login manager: Slim .... [OK]", but the graphic shell isn't started.

I tried:

* Adding "blacklist nouveau" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. But tazhw --detected-modules and lsmod still shows nouveau, so I doubt if this had any effect.

* tazhw setup nvidia: seems to install okay, but end with "Error: unable to open display :0.0"

* tazhw setup nvidia --non-free: says Unable to find nvidia in the mirrored package list, same for get-nvidia. Then it asks me to remove xorg-xf86-video-nv. I continue, answer y to everything, it ends up being unable to start nvidia-settings.

* Added HorizSync 28-64 and VertRefresh 60 to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-Monitor.conf and Modes "1024x768" to 70-Screen.conf.

I think maybe it's because it's a laptop, the screen is handled differently than a normal external monitor??

How did you install the 4.0-RC1 on you hard disk ?

Are these files on the disk ?

$ ls -l /etc/slim.conf /etc/pango/pango.modules

Wow, quick reply! :-)

When the live cd was booted, I went to System Tools, then to Slitaz Control (or something like that) where I could go to Install.

Yes, I do have slim.conf and pango.modules on my disk.

I tried installing the drivers from nvidia, but it says ldconfig is not available.

Re: Unable to open display after install to HDD, live cd was working!

Nvidia card dont work out-of-the-box in last 4.0-RC1, it's now a know bug :-( But it should work with the Xorg nv driver in live and install. Strange that it worked in live mode but not for hd install, guess something got wrong with the installer but what ? And if you remove all these pkgs ans reinstall Xorg properly ? Also to avois a module load on boot, have a look to /etc/rcS.conf this is realy specific to SliTaz, we dont boot like other distro and have one centralized configuration file à la BSD :-)

Hmm.. not sure what driver I am using now, but removing nouveau from /etc/rcS.conf did the trick. It now shows the slim login after booting. Thanks!
