Flash player for old CPUs

Hello,

I am upgrading my Slitaz 4.0 to 5.0 RC2. I was getting mad trying to make FlashPlayer work: all browsers crashed as soon as they found a Flash object (e.g. Google StreetView).

Then I stumbled upon this post: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-50rc1/page/4#post-29871 and bingo! My CPU is a Pentium III; on 4.0 I had Flash 11.1, so it worked. Now get-flash-plugin downloads 11.2 which fails.

Since Slitaz is tailored to work on old PCs, maybe get-flash-plugin could look for the "sse2" flag in /proc/cpuinfo, then if it's not here, download the old Flash 11.1 instead of the latest one (the download link is given in the above cited post)?

I would attach the tazpkg made up with Adobe's Flash 11.1 tarball, in case another user is getting as mad as I was, but obviously the forum won't let me. If anyone wants it, just ask (email llevrel at yahoo dot fr).

Cheers

Re: Flash player for old CPUs

The 11.2 flash plugin included in Google Chrome 19 for Linux was compiled for SSE, and may be used in Firefox or other browsers by machines with processors that handle SSE.

Source: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Flash_Plugin_Installation#Installing_on_.22old.22_.28non-SSE2.29_machines

So you can run 11.2, this is the very latest version.

There is also the possibility to use Flash from the latest Chrome version (they switched to their own plugin API after Chrome 19) with the freshplayerplugin:

But I'm not sure about that - new Flash versions bundled with Chrome may have been compiled for SSE2, too. Never tested it.

Re: Flash player for old CPUs

I tried Chrome (as installed by get-google-chrome) but it complained my computer is too old, the closed itself.

Maybe I'll try to get that Chrome plugin you talk about.

Re: Flash player for old CPUs

Install this package.

To have it work in Firefox, just copy the plugin in the correct path.

Usually it's like this:

cp -fi /usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Enjoy.

P.S.: This is a package that I'm using on a Pentium III that has Slitaz 5 on it.

P.P.S.: Crap, file upload doesn't work on my end either. See mail.

Re: Flash player for old CPUs

Hi,

The problem with the approach suggested by schmatzler is that we have to rely on a third party for the distribution of the plugin (cf. link to a download service in the cited wiki entry). So I don't think this is reliable enough to be included in get-flash-plugin.

On the other hand, Oracle will probably keep publishing old Flash versions (even if the downloading address occasionnally changes).
