SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

Sony PCG-C1XD is a notebook made in 1999. It has a Pentium II processor (~400Mhz) and 64MB of RAM (10 GB HDD).

I'm currently running Windows XP "Performance Edition" on it and it's running fairly decent (I can even play Mortal Kombat IV and FIFA 98 on it).

The trouble is that Windows just eats everything so watching a video becomes quite difficult. I've had this problem on other old machines and SliTaz solved it for me (mplayer under SliTaz is a Godsend - it just makes ancient hardware play videos faster than some modern machines).

Anyway, so I'm trying to boot SliTaz 4.0 (from a CD, using a PCMCIA CD-ROM that came with the laptop) on a this machine.

I got the loram-cdrom flavour, burned it on a CD (at 1X) - but... it gets into kernel panic before I get to a desktop (or at least a command-line form).

Question 1: Is it even possible to run SliTaz (4.0 or any other version) with a desktop on these specs?

Question 2.1: If yes, what do I need to do? Are there any extra parameters I need to add to the boot?

Question 2.2: If no, is there any other Linux-alternative for that machine? (I already tried DSL, Puppy and TinyCore - to no avail)

Thanks in advance.

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

the problem could be that the PCMCIA driver is not built in the kernel - that gives the kernel panic

when you run windows - the best solution is grub4dos on the windows patition

http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:frugal

works like a charm on my Portege R100

EDIT: any try to get 5.0 working on it - its much faster on those old machines than 4.0

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

(deleted 'cause I solved that)

I get Error 62: The number of heads must be specified. The `--heads=0' option tells map to choose a value (but maybe unsuitable) for you.

Press any key to continue...

...help?

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

I pressed "e" and added this before the path: --mem --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0

This leads me to this screen:

>Autodetect number-of-heads failed. Use default value 255

>Autodetect sectors-per-track failed. Use default value 63

>Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory

I'm gonna try with SliTaz Rolling now...

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

did you try the rolling.iso ?

http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/rolling/slitaz-rolling.iso

it should boot, but only base

if it works, you can try to make a loram.iso on another machine

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

>did you try the rolling.iso ?

Yes, I did that just now. Same error 28 (after I had to edit the "(hd1)" at the end with "(hd0)" because it said it couldn't mount the partition - although it could do that with SliTaz4-loram - strange).

>it should boot, but only base

Nope. Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory

>you can try to make a loram.iso on another machine

err... I don't really know how to do that. All my attempts to create a personalized SliTaz ISO have utterly failed (although admittedly my problem was large rootfs')...

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

I tried with slitaz-cooking-jwm.iso from your link, @kultex.

Still error 28 (cannot fit into memory).

I'll try with the cooking-loram from your link as well in a few minutes.

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

With the slitaz-cooking-loram.iso flavor from your link, kultex, I only get Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition.

In other cases, I used to solve this issue by changing hd0 to hd1 (or viceversa). But in this case, if I do that, I just get "file not found".

Looks like there may be the case that SliTaz just can't run at all on this machine hmm

Re: SliTaz on Sony Vaio PCG-C1XD?

there was a big kernel change, but I dont remember, if it was before or after the release date of this lowram iso

to be shure, if it realy does not work, you have to make lowram iso of current rolling. You can also try Antix, which is also ok for old hardware - when Antix runs, then SliTAz 5.0 should also run

otherwhise you need to compile your own kernel with built in drivers
