Hi!
This post is intended to you to recommend some nice and handy software packages that could be installed at Slitaz. (Note: only recommend packages that are *already* at Slitaz repositories)
This post will be the base to the "Recommended Software Packages" page at Slitaz Doc -> Guides.
In order to make this topic a little more organizated, please separates the different categories of packs of your recommendation, like this:
- Internet: Firefox, ...
- Multimedia: mplayer,...
- Office: OpenOffice,...
- etc, etc...
Feel free to make as many recommendations as you want.

I don't thing it would be possible to recommand some software! The use of PC is to variable from person to person as well as the teel and perception.
For some use you have no alternative: for example open and change details in autoCAD drawing (you have to own a legal copy of autoCAD or invite your partner to save the drawing again in the exchange format of autoCAD; if you have luck, you can open this drawing in OpenOffice and look on details on a machine range being more than 100 meter long or a high building!). Second example you will reproduce exactly a form of an autority that have to fill often (and know that it would be accepted; all autorities find not that always ok). If it is really tricky, you will probably have to use OpenOffice (again! as OpenOffice will offer the about full compatibility with Microsoft Office).
But for the most other purposes? Hm...
Browser are a special case as SliTaz always includes in his graphic system the browser engine "webkit" and uses a own user interface for it, "TazWEB". So you can add more "webkit" derivates without toil and without to make your system to fat. For this reason, SliTaz comes with Midori, a webkit derivate, and I use actually Xombrero, an other webkit derivate and find it very good as included in SliTaz now (it is not always as well included: good in Kubuntu 14.04 upgraded 14.10 but bad in Debian8 or actual SID).
Probably you will have to add in all cases flashplugin and java. I don't install open java but the original one (non free and non open :-(( ... but I have never uses where it doesn't work ;-) ...). See into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins if you find both (files libflashplayer.so and libnpjp2.so).
flash is available using tazpkg but you will have to download java directly from the java page https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and follow the instructions (link on the same page) as package packed as *.tar.gz,
download directly into the /usr directory:
open sakura monitor
su -
mkdir /usr/java
cd /usr/java
wget http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=103418
tar zxvf jre*
this unpack the package
rm jre*
cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
prepare the next step in Sakura:
ln -s+"space"
(space bar of course!)
roll up in sakura using the mouse roll key and search the entry with libnpjp2,so in it
mark all the content of that line
roll back to the new line "ln -s space"
hit on the mouse key used as key now and active the line with "enter"
ls
(you have to see the new link now as well as the link to libflashplayer.so.)
exit
exit
I never use Firefox any more. I don't accept the deprivations tactics from the mozilla co. against xulrunner and so against all xulrunner derivatives especially Seamonkey and Instantbird. And I find bad that it is not possible to erase each entry separately that you did make in a mozilla but only complete categories of entries. As the ~/.mozilla subdir becomes a very heavy depot of private dates along the time, and as it is easy to copy that subdir and re open it on a different PC it doesn't meet in the least my exigences of protection of private dates...
xombrero do about the same but is secure! sorry for kompoZer (not available on SliTaz depots but a Seamonkey version would be to find there and can do the same, and probably offer IRC ability if you want it! But the inconvenients are exactly the same as with Firefox: giant subdir with tons of your date and looked pages traces)...
yes, of course, I also install Mplayer as you are proposing.
I regret don't to find some geographic applications (marble qt version, and the old, but always usefull, merkaartor at the SliTaz depot) as I am a very active bicycle user! This would be more important for me as to listen music on the PC (my PC is not adequat in sount quality at all!!!): I use geographic app's really each day (not all stand alone as marble or merkaartor: there are some good ones also online. But if I need merkaartor, merkaartor is able to re draw all the streets of a big town themself from the aerial view of BING and it is legal between OSM and BING but probably also legal for private use) I have to reboot from SliTaz and use an other Linux...
There are my ideas concerning your proposals...

Your post is very interesting.
I decided to create this post at Forum because I was surfing and reading the Slitaz Doc, clicked at "Recommended Software Packages" page expecting to see a list of nice packs to install and I was redirected to this page:

...witch contains only a discussion of features that Slitaz 5 should have, not a list of "recommended software".
If it's not possible to recommend packages, so the "Recommended Software Packages" page at Slitaz Doc unfortunately has no purpose. :C

The SliTaz Doc is completely open. If you feel the need to add stuff probably that other users will feel sometimes the same need and you really can open yourself such a page, both, as you will and can, in your Portuguese language and/or in English and if you meet an Portuguese (or French or Spanish, both can read without great difficulty Portuguese texts depending of the change or not of the signification in Brasilian portuguese compared with Latin/her own language) speaking better English than you, you can ask ihm for some help! Generally users do such help if the job to do is not to long...
Create your Wiki page an go on! I would create it on Brasilian portuguese as the "mother page" and immediately after that the English one with the same topic on English as child page and only include a link in that English page to the Portuguese so that you can work more free. You can also create the same page in French and Spanish, also only with such a link: Perhaps you can animate so user to help you without to have to ask!
Note: I am such a French user and can also write in German ;-) but I have actually some priorities to finish. Although, for a few lines, I would help...
Note2: I don't know if the SliTaz forum as a Mini Messages Service to contact other users directly per Mini Messages? Can some one answer that question?

Thanks for your valuable tips. I don't have too much free time, but I'll try to create some Doc pages as I learn more about Linux and Slitaz. First in Portuguese (as I'm brazilian) and then in English.
The more the documentation is complete, the more people will be interested in Slitaz, as it could become easier to newbies (like me XP ).

... definitely! Although it is easy enough to download and run the binary, this is of course not the correct way to do such things. Fifth, Vivaldi, Otter, QTweb, QupZilla etc. would also be interesting. But since the SliTaz desktop is built with Gtk+, why not stick with Gtk+ based browsers? Installing QT or FLTK just to run a particular browser seems to defy the purpose of a small distro. What I've been reading about Xombrero sounds very interesting. I will try it out later today or tomorrow.
On another note ... since the entire repo is currently being cooked with updated or re-configured packages, maybe it's a good idea to create a dedicated feedback thread for the next rolling release and make it sticky at the top?

Reading the last new message, I see the recommandation of Trixar concerning AutoCAD-like programs.
I did work as project engineer in the German industrie. our plants were sometimes more than 2 or 3 hundred meter long... We did use CAD applications since about 1972..1973 on IBM central computer. Later as a lot of German producers we did use DEC and DEC software and did never ourself use AutoCAD because AutoCAD is younger and did run on PC and not on central computers. But we did often receive big drawings per email from customers and engineer offices made with autoCAD. our employer did not want to pay licences to autoCAD to see and process with those foreign drawings being absolutely not compatible with our drawing templates...
but we did find a two solutions to our problems (on drawings till size A0 !)
- to see and process a bit the receipt drawing, we did use OpenOffice, yes simply OpenOffice: it can open old versions of *.dxf (Drawing eXchange Format) of autoCAD and process them really acceptable (you can find a 10 mm screw on the drawing of a plant with 100 m length as far, of course, the screw were be apparent in the autoCAD version!) and process them. Exceptions: we did find distorsions in curved form not always seen as curved in different sizes.
- to change the language of drawing descriptions on finished drawing we did use the proprietary app Wang- or later Kodak-Imaging beeing added without cost to Windows 95! Divers translator offices, especially Russian offices, did work very well with that cost less software and make the translations as far the machine did be to send to Russian spoken destination! I suppose it would be possible to use Imaging in Wine as far you find a old Windows 95 CD. An adaptor for Windows NT did exist later...
Divers young architects did use OpenOffice to make as beginers without money the needed drawing for great building projects with OpenOffice! no need really from other software not being a really full professional software!
