Install slitaz-4.0 on pendrive using Slitaz-3.0?

Hi, all. About a year ago, I succeeded in installing a bootable Slitaz-3.0 on a USB stick from Windows XP (on an eeepc netbook) without using a CD. It took a lot of doing. Unfortunately, as much as I like Slitaz-3.0, I haven't been using it much because the Midori web browser won't access my webmail website (among other problems with it).

I see in the repos that there is a slitaz-4.0-firefox.iso. Thinking that this might solve my problems, I'm wondering if I can install it on a fresh USB stick using my Slitaz-3.0 stick and either tazusb or the installer program. Can anyone help me out with this question?

Also, what about Slitaz-5.0? Is there a version of it with a good recent browser? Will it install on a USB stick using Slitaz-3.0?

Thanks for any help with this.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: Install slitaz-4.0 on pendrive using Slitaz-3.0?

Hi Mike,

it'been a while !

Yes, you should be able to install SliTaz-4.0-firefox from SliTaz 3.0.

But I'd advise you to install the last rolling iso (http://mirror1.slitaz.org/iso/rolling/slitaz-rolling-core.iso). Its web browser is still Midori but it works probably better than on the previous releases.

You can also install or palemoon (not available for SliTaz 4.0) or iron-linux web browsers. I recently installed iron-linux on an old acer with 256MB RAM; needs space on the HD but runs flawlessly

The last RC that has been released (slitaz-5.0-rc3, http://mirror1.slitaz.org/iso/5.0/slitaz-5.0-rc3.iso) uses xombrero web browser. I like it but its use is a bit special; you have to learn keyboard shortcuts to open/close a new tab... and commands to go back the home page, or search for a word in a page...

Did you always need an umbrella in your living room? ;-)

Re: Install slitaz-4.0 on pendrive using Slitaz-3.0?

Hi, Ceel!

Yes, it has been a while. Nice to hear from you. Ça va?

I think I will try SliTaz-4.0-firefox first. I don't like the Midori browser.

Question: Installing from Slitaz-3.0, should I use tazusb or the Slitaz installer program?

Salut.

Michael

Hi Michael,

For a LiveUSB, use tazusb, the SliTaz installer is for a full installation.

It should be simpler than doing it from Windows ;-)

Don't forget to ask for formatting ext2 or 3 if you want persistance on your Live.

Re: Install slitaz-4.0 on pendrive using Slitaz-3.0?

Okay, thanks, Ceel. I will do as you say.

I still need to go and buy a new pendrive for this.

Yes, it should be easier than that crazy Windows installation of Slitaz-3. I can't even remember what I did. I was so surprised when it booted that I almost fainted [grin].

How does persistence work with Slitaz-4 in ext2 or 3? (By the way, which is better? I seem to recall that ext2 is non-journaling, so maybe that's better for a pendrive. What do you think?)

P.S. I am not receiving email notifications of posts.

Re: Install slitaz-4.0 on pendrive using Slitaz-3.0?

Hi Michael,

Yes, ext2 is not journalized; I use it for stick and even hard disks from a few months.

When your LiveUSB is formatted ext, /home/tux is saved on the key. So you keep your works and configs for applications. But it won't save packages you've installed; if you want to do this too you'll have to run

[c]tazusb writefs gzip[/c] as root in a terminal

It'll save your previous rootfs and will create a new one with your added/suppressed packages.

Before you can also run

[c]tazpkg -cc[/c] to delete the .tazpkg files that are in the cache and which would grow unnecessarily your new rootfs.gz

You have not checked the box or this feature does not work? I don't use it.

Thank you, Ceel. I will let you know how this new installation works out as soon as I have a chance to do it.
