Hi, I installed Slitaz 5 RC3 in a Dell Inspiron with nVidia Geforce Go 7950 GT card in it.
Previously, I had Slitaz 4 running on the same machine with nVidia non-free module and compiz without any problems.
When first installed it automatically installed the nouveau driver and X started without any issues. Downloaded nVidia non-free driver installed it and changed 60-Device.conf to nvidia as the driver. Now when I boot slim login screen does not come up. /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows following conditions

Following up on the warning on driver ABI and the recommendation to downgrade the X server, I uninstalled xorg-server and installed xorg-server from Slitaz 4 repos.
When rebooted I was able to get to Slim logon screen but after that system just freezes presumably due to incompatible versions of software but it is clear that the version of xorg-server and nvidia non-free driver has some incompatibilities.
Any ideas on how to overcome this issue?
Many thanks.

173.14.31 driver requires old version of Xorg. Don't know why we have both non-working and non-free package in repo.
Try 96.43.23 - was tested by me with current X on 7600 card, only need manual symlinks for opengl:

@az_ua, worked like a charm. Many thanks.
EDIT: Perhaps a version of nvidia driver which is compatible with xorg-server will be released one of these days?

Tried to load nvidia kernel module via rcS.conf - this gets me to the Slim logon screen but after that the system freezes.
Yesterday, I think I removed the xorg-server from the system and installed the xorg-server from Slitaz 4 repos. While it all loaded correctly and I was able to login I noticed that it was extremely sluggish.
I will do more testing later on and give you an update.
Thanks for your time.

Hi,
Downloaded nvidia 304.125 and installed the nvidia kernel modules and blacklisted nouveau using /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.
All goes well and I get the Slim logon screen and then the system freezes - cannot even do a cntl+alt+f2. Perhaps the input devices are not recognized???
To exclude incompatible config files I moved xorg.conf.d directory elsewhere to force using the xorg.conf file created by nvidia installer. Nvidia installer did not return any errors or warnings.
What puzzles me is that I was able to install the nvidia driver in the repo (did not have to use the nvidia installer at all) and get it to work perfectly well with Slitaz 4 but not with Slitaz 5.
Thanks guys - any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
PS. @az_ua, I think 96xx worked when I removed xorg-server and installed the older version of xorg-server from Slitaz 4 repos. I should have documented it all but I like hacking around rather than being a disciplined tester!

No, I'm using 96xx driver right now with clean Slitaz 5.0's Xorg without any 4.0 parts.
With removed linux-drm package, and removed files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
10-ServerLayout.conf 50-Monitor.conf 60-Device.conf 70-Screen.conf
With added to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:
blacklist drm
blacklist drm_kms_helper

Slitaz 5.0 uses xorg-server 1.12.
This is list of supported hardware:

There are no any 7950 here, only 7900 (really it's same cards).

Done a lot more testing with 304.125 and as per Xorg.0.log attached here it appears the problem is caused due to the fact that 'hot plugging' is enabled.
18.802] (WW) Hotplugging is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
[ 18.802] (WW) Disabling Keyboard0
[ 18.802] (WW) Disabling Mouse0
This is why I cannot go beyond the Slim log on screen.
Any ideas on how to disable 'Hot plugging' so that keyboard and mouse are not disabled? Everything else seem to be OK.
@az_ua, thanks for your comment but now that I have come this far I would like to explore all option to get 304 working. If I cannot go any further, certainly I will try 96xx. Thanks.

OK, finally sorted it out....
I had to turn off hotplugging using the server flags in xorg.conf as follows;
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSecton
Now I can login without any issues.
Thanks, az_ua and mojo for your time and efforts.

Addendum:
Despite proprietary nvidia being successfully installed I had a problem with running Compiz. The problem was associated with symlinks not being updated when nvidia driver was installed.
I had to remove the existing symlinks for libGL.so and libGL.so.1 and recreate the symlinks to point to libGL.so.304.125 created which was when installing the nvidia driver.
ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so.304.125 /usr/lib/libGL.so
ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so.304.125 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
Once this was done Compiz started without any problems.
Hope this will be useful for anyone else wanting to use proprietary nvidia driver.
