Re: Blender won't open

Hi,

Your linux-media package is not up-to-date, so the upgrade was not complete. Do run the commands today.

Lack of memory? Open another terminal, run [c]vmstat 1[/c], launch blender and look at the "free" column in the other terminal: does it drop to 0?

Re: Blender won't open

Well here's the thing....now it's suddenly working again!!!!!Also I forgot to mention my Linux media package is not up-to-date because after the upgrade I tried to run my webcam and it didn't work so I switched back to the old package but I'll run the commands anyway. When I run vmstat 1 it says : /bin/sh: vmstat: not found. Also I doubt it's a lack of memory because I have 1GB RAM and 500GB Hard Drive with nothing else installed on it.

Re: Blender won't open

vmstat is in package procps.

The size of your hard disk doesn't help. At most you can use it for swap, but the swap size is fixed (so e.g. making room on your HD doesn't add swap space automatically). You can see total useable swap space with command [c]free[/c] (line "Swap:", column "total").

1 GB of RAM is not /that/ large, especially for memory-consuming software like those working on pictures or videos.

Maybe your bug is related to /video memory/, but I know nothing about how this works.

Re: Blender won't open

Please reread what I wrote about vmstat: you would launch [c]vmstat 1[/c] (it's a "one") and look how free memory evolves while blender starts (but maybe blender starts in less than one second?).

Also, remember to post "terminal stuff" between backquotes (`).

By the way, you see you have no active swap space.

Re: Blender won't open

Lol! Looks like the backquotes were around the first line only. You can put them around a block of several lines like this:

(backquote)

line

line

line

(backquote)

About your problem: as I said, maybe a problem of video memory, but I don't know how to investigate it. As for regular RAM, from the output you give it looks like Blender doesn't use much (around 100 MB). Perhaps just make sure you don't have too many software running at the time when you launch it.
