Sound does not work at all

I cannot get any sound. Alsamixer sees the soundcard (Device: ATI IXP Chip: Conexant Cx20468-31). But i've no sound (tried all the various ways i'm aware of to produce at least a beep from cl but with no luck). I checked with htop, and there i see, no alsa daemon is running, but is that that way alsa works?

PS. Long time ago, i had running on this laptop crunchbang and sound wasn't a problem at all. So it must be a setting problem, in some way.

Can you try if the module preload fixes your problem?
