Need help: boot hangs on slim

Suddenly, without any obvious reason, the boot/reboot hangs in slim: I get the slim window with the default user, but there it is like the keyboard were dead. I'm out of any idea, what to do.

I booted the laptop with a grml usb-stick, mounted the drive and reverted the only settings change i' did before the last reboot. But nothing changed.

Thanks a lot for any hint!!!

PS. [OT]Yesterday i could not log-in to the forum: Was that my fault or did the server have a problem?[/OT]

Re: Need help: boot hangs on slim

Do you have custom Xorg configuration files? Move them out of place and retry. You may also search /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages.

Re: Need help: boot hangs on slim

I do not have any xorg.conf file and i checked the log file, but i did not see anything obvious. It's the second time this happens. The first time i thought it might be a mess created by some bad configuration during the install so i re-installed all. But now, a fresh install would be a pain in the *** since i already did a lot of personal data on the device ...

Would be nice to find a way how to solve this problem.

Thanks a lot in advance!

BTW, what would be the way to NOT boot into X (slim) but into the console?

Re: Need help: boot hangs on slim

Can you try an external (USB) keyboard?

(booting into console) Never did this, but upon inspection of /etc/init.d/rcS, it seems you have to set [c]screen=text[/c] on the kernel line in the bootloader. Good idea, that will tell whether X is the culprit.

Re: Need help: boot hangs on slim

Unfortunately, no. There is no usb keyboard to try with.

And, no a second time: screen=text is not accepted by (slitaz) grub.

I'm baffled! You'll need a guru's help on this...
