Firefox versions.

Hi folks,

I am something of a new-user with SliTaz but so-far I am very impressed with its performance on older hardware.

Though I am fairly new to SliTaz I have had some limited experience of using other light-weight Linux distros but one mystery which crops up regularly for me is what appears to be the frquent use of outdated versions of the Firefox browser.

That is to say that the version of Firefox supported as a download for SliTaz appears to be a number of revisions behind the current release. I have also seen this in other distros and I assume there must be a good reason for it but I wonder if someone could clear this mystery up for me please?

The reason for my concern is that most revisions of Firefox seem to be for maintaining security so it concerns me when I see the version number is behind the current realease version. What am I missing?

Kind Regards,

slitazuser871

Re: Firefox versions.

Hi slitazuser871,

None mystery, only missing maintainers for package "firefox". As a side note, it's a 2 GB of source code, and it need about 2 hours to compile (info for currently packaged version 17).

If you want to use current stable version of Firefox, you can install one of "firefox-official*" package:

http://pkgs.slitaz.org/?package=firefox-official

I maintain these packages last time trying to keep actual version.

These packages are not compiled (this type of packages is unpopular in the SliTaz), just repackaging official Mozilla tarball into SliTaz package format.

Re: Firefox versions.

Aleksej & Ceel,

Thankyou for taking the time to repond and for clarification of the various Firefox package options. I read the additional threads you listed and now have a much better understanding.

I have also downloaded/installed the official package and everthing is working including the "update" feature.

Thanks again.

Regards,
