seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

as required by the technology evolution, it could be great to release an UEFI-Class3 (without legacy/CSM of course) slitaz ISO to allow compatibility on computers already running windows 8 or higher.

this idea would place slitaz to the linux-distro able to run in full uefi mode, and let people runnig slitaz everyday to move up on a new recent computer when having a new one.

could it be possible to get an official answer from slitaz developpers, to have a compatible UEFI slitaz ISO, with software to install grub on an UEFI, in the 2018 or 2019 year?

regards;

We are trying ( see http://tank.slitaz.org/~bellard/mkefi.sh ) but grub2 don't help a lot...

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

1) the depiction, that UEFI is a technological evoluton necessary for Win8 Computer is not true. I have a new dell inspiron 11 with win10 and it boots SliTaz without any problems.

If I want to use Linux on a new computer, I think I should inform myself, what are the  preconditions....

and the precondition is well known - to buy a computer, where you can switch between uefi and legacy  and   there are lots of new computers with this possibility - especially dell is known to be linux-friendly, but there are also others.

2) when even debian 9, with hundres of developers is not able to get the new testing release with uefi support, how this should work with the little slitaz team?

https://linux.slashdot.org/story/17/05/01/1452209/uefi-secure-boot-booted-from-debian-9-stretch

Pascal is trying, but I think he cannot tell, if it is possible 2019.

And I think that this is not 1. priority for SliTaz

3) it is possible to boot SliTaz with UEFI - with rEFInd - http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/

I have no idea until now, how it works, because I have no need for it, because all my computers can switch to legacy mode.

But it would be cool, if you find out how its works and make a guide for other SliTaz users

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

1) yes, lot of computers integers, like you said, the CSM/Legacy feature;

in fact, we want it to be disabled :

uefi supports GPT and big sized disks

uefi supports fast boot

and a lot of others comfortable features

bios is just done... ipv6 is supposed to kill ipv4 in decades, bios should not survive to the uefi invasion..

that's why i specially wrote in the title "without legacy class3" that means without csm and all this legacy bios created by uefi... you could even run w98/XP with this legacy;

so if people with new computer with w8 or higher, with windows already installed want dualboot without reinstalling in legacy/csm, because wind installation is already made by manufacturer, why switch to csm/legacy, just for booting slower?

2) it's not the first prior of slitaz, but i think it's easily in the top10 (or 5..)

3) refind is like handling a new distro. in fact it's like i was installing slitaz after fedora to handle fedora grub2 bootloader to launch either slitaz through it.

the better solution for slitaz is to carry his own uefi installer, like it's possible with  grub/legacy bios, when i was creating a live usb of slitaz i didnt need to use another distro..

really, i think make slitaz compatible with uefi could only be a good thing.. it's very useful either to do some IT intervention without having to switch csm/Leg on/off each time to recover data or try another OS...

here it goes smile smile

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

just as a warning, slitaz is gonna die if it is still not compliant with uefi WITHOUT CSM.

most of computers integers CSM layer, but dont try to use it with a windows, enable CSM and... no windows boot anymore..

slitaz needs today to run on uefi class3, legacy/CSM disabled. (yes, disabled)

only debian and fedora are running on this kind;

please, slitaz-devs, tell us how install slitaz on an uefi laptop on side of the windows8/10 in uefi only;

on my new laptop,running w8/uefi, i wont enable csm just for slitaz, we are serious here.

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

lot of laptops are coming with csm disabled, since two years w10 is spreaded almost everywhere in the general public;

what if in less than ten years csm/legacy was not available to disable anymore on next gens computers? end of lot of linux distros, i'm afraid, but could be true soon. it's a fact.

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

whats true at the moment is, that you do not know, whats in two years...

maybe there are no more intel computers with this meltdown and spectre f*uck...

maybe we will just have arm64 computers with u-boot

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

Hi there,

Just for record, I don't yet touch (U)EFI in any manner. Any of my hardware containing it.

So, even if I will want to develop this topic, I'll cannot examine if it work or don't…

@ lm2,

If SliTaz Next becomes a full 64bit distro (http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/linux-kernel-has-been-upgraded/page/2#post-45504) you can run SliTaz in UEFI mode (with secure boot disabled.

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

@æleksej : your hardware probably contains a legacy/CMS mode enabled.

i'm talking about booting slitaz with this option disabled;

ceel : if slitaz next doesnt handle 32bits support for old computers (i still have netbooks here running atom/x32), who will take slitaz anyway?

slitaz should not at all leave 32bits support..

another :

slitaz next... people are still waiting for slitaz 5 STABLE, doesnit?

i dont understand why slitaz 5 seems like abandoned.. users never asked for this..

we are still waiting from slitaz :

switching to different wifi without retyping the wpa key each time, especially when you change often (people with laptop could move..)

wifi supporting 802.x/eap networks/security/authentication

better power management for laptops (as suspend available for users, automatic hibernation..)

using few X sessions in parallel...

i will update others points to make slitaz progress (i'm looking for end-user quality in slitaz, i wont stop smile )

A lot of your suggestions you can do yourself - see the guides.....

So do it yourself or wait

Re: seriously : UEFI without legacy, Class 3

i'm not nasty, i'm just giving an outlook, another point of view, of what common people, are looking slitaz..

it's just frustrating when :

you just wanna install slitaz on a preinstalled w8/10 laptop with uefi only (slit doesnt support it)

you cant suspend without command line, without being root, on your old laptop

you cant just let it run something on battery without staying near because of behaviour

and other wifi things.

if you're working on it, where could i find the roadmap?

for ipv6, only slitaz servers/admin can do that..

>A lot of your suggestions you can do yourself - see the guides.....

end users just doesnt want to use terminal, thats all sad
