Re: slitaz - why so long ?

if you look in hg http://hg.slitaz.org/?sort=lastchange there is almost only Aleksej and Pascal left as developers. For a complex distribution like SliTAz this too little. I am very happy, that SliTaz is still alive.

The kernel of 5.0 is quite old, but still supported - for me it is working quite well on my old hardware - I have some newer machines and there I dont use SliTaz, because the old kernel doen not support the hardware.

Aleksej is working on 6.0 and I hope, there is first testing iso in the end of summer beginning of autumn - http://cook.slitaz.org/next/ - the kernel will be 4.9 - maybe for newer Intel Atoms there will be a special 4.11 kernel.

Re: slitaz - why so long ?

Hi moulefrite,

How I see the situation (absolutely IMHO):

Pankso (Christophe Lincoln), founder of SliTaz, was very keen on yoga (you can find it in socials).

He said all he wanted to say in the SliTaz project, and he released his “offspring” to freedom.

But it so happened that besides him no one wants to write the texts for the project.

To write programs - of course, please.

To make packages - not a question, really.

Releasing splits into some parts: making RCs, final testing, freezing repository, rebuilding all the packages, providing mirror resources, writing and translating release notes.

Seems like just anyone here don't want to write release notes.

SliTaz-5 exists right now. But it's unreleased. And now it calls SliTaz-Rolling.

You can obtain it from mirror: http://mirror1.slitaz.org/iso/rolling/

@Aleksej

I have been looking for a new project to help with. I am a Tech Writer by trade so notes, blog posts, and etc are right up my alley.

Let me know how I can help.

Re: slitaz - why so long ?

Hi Dennis,

If you see it necessary, it may look like previous release notes you may found here:

http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/releases/4.0/relnotes.en.html

The problem is so many years passed, and while anyone can track every change using http://hg.slitaz.org , this work is not the most interesting on earth.

Another (weak) the sources of info are: socials @fb and @twitter, http://scn.slitaz.org/ , mailing list archives: https://listengine.tuxfamily.org/lists.tuxfamily.org/slitaz/ , and of course this forum.

(Anyway, I found this is very boring.)

Re: slitaz - why so long ?

hi,

firstly thanks to aleksej and pascal making slitaz reborn again..

yes, i'm gonna disturb you :

for help we have only this place, which is a little bit silent answers..

i still have personnaly few problems about :

wifi tool, which is not good at all when we have to switch between ssid..

suspend tool, no way out of root/cli

uefi, no comment

..and the latest stable is 4.0, which is 4-5 yrs late, and somebody is working on..6, before making stable the 5th?

in fact, we know you're working hard for us, but general public, interested geeks can't have a real good image of slitaz... latest is a RC since years, not stable, hard to be in touch with devs.. it's something..

is it possible to have one way to be in touch in the 24/48hrs with pascal/aleksej?

it's really something that slitaz have to come back on : allow users to talk directly with devs, like other distro..

forum, mail, irc, just be available few minutes of a day to answer users requests... does slitaz want to have a strong beloved community?

smile

nothing @ all, kind sir.

> this place, which is a little bit silent answers..

ah, yes. im frequently here, but i can only answer "i dont know" on the most of the questions, but i find it's very silly.

> i still have personnaly few problems

i doubt slitaz will solve them

> and somebody is working on..6, before making stable the 5th?

oh you know, slitaz for takes me some nostalgic feelings, as it was few years ago... also it's my main system. but I want to try some modern softwares. here, on slitaz. in reality that's all. i dont want to release anything. but i can tell it certainly will be not five. i called it "next". without numbering. seems it will be the "last"...

> is it possible to have one way to be in touch in the 24/48hrs with pascal/aleksej?

if i know the answer - i write it, otherwise i dont make any noise.

> does slitaz want

oh, where's the spirit of slitaz now...
