X11 help

Hey all, I have a slightly odd question. I'm running SliTaz in a chroot on Ubuntu and I'm trying to start X11 in the chroot without buggering my display (rebooting is getting rather annoying). A few years ago I was working for a company an we made extensive use of "sudo xinit ${WM} -- :1" when testing various environments. I was new so I never quite understood how it worked, but it was extremely useful.

I'm trying to do something similar in the SliTaz chroot I've set up, however the X setup used is /very/ different and I honestly don't know where to begin.

Is there anybody who could point me in the right direction? Specifically I'm trying to run both my current X and the chroot X, but on different displays.

Complicating this somewhat is the fact that I have a broken laptop screen, and an external screen. The server /must/ use the external screen otherwise I cannot see anything and given that I'm not quite competent in this realm I won't be able to navigate the system blind either.

Thanks for the great OS and particularly the community and docs BTW. smile

Re: X11 help

In case anyone else is crazy enough to try this too I've made some progress. Yay. smile

According to Stack Exchange 'mount --bind /run/udev' is necessary to get devices working. This solved the Halt and Catch Fire issue I had.

It's still not working, but getting there. As far as I can tell the X config isn't happy with this idea (nor is openbox for that matter).

So, next steps would be to reverse the SliTaz X configuration doohickies as I have yet to find documentation on exactly how that works. That pretty much seems to be all that would be needed to get a SliTaz desktop running. In that line it may be worth my purposes to add an option to init for running in a chroot. Will have to look into that.

Re: X11 help

Sooo, another progress report. The X server runs nicely (had to reboot so I got a chance to test), I definitely broke things all over the place to get to this point however. It takes a really long time to start and tosses out a large number of errors. Also, I'm finding out that the chroot's separation from the main system is not clean enough as I'm getting bleed through in both directions which is rather concerning. Going to research creating "clean" chroots.

Does anybody know how SliTaz's X configuration works? Also the init process as it may be worth it to run init with a chroot specific config.
