Do you know Brave?

Hello all,

Brave is a web browser based on chromium. I discovered it a few weeks ago, installed it on my android smartphone and adopted it immediately. It is really faster than all others I used before.

After a few difficulties, I succeded to download a .deb package and converted it in .tazpkg.

Brave is only available for 64bit Linux distro so the package will work only with Next64.

The .desktop file in /usr/share/applications returns

[c]Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/brave-browser-stable" (No such file or directory)[/c] and yet, the file is present and permissions seem good...

So you'll have to modify it (btw, logos are in /opt/brave.com/brave)

To run Brave, type in a terminal

[c]$ /opt/brave.com/brave/brave[/c]

You can also copy the code in your applications.conf file.

To run it from a root terminal, add the [c]--no-sandbox[/c] option:

[c]# /opt/brave.com/brave/brave --no-sandbox[/c]

A last detail: brave is NOT a lightweight web browser...

But that shouldn't be a problem for 64bit computers.`

If possible, kindly share the .tazpkg file of Brave browser.

Alternatively, kindly consider including it on http://distro.ibiblio.org/slitaz/packages/next64/

A while back the Unix Sheikh published a review of a whole bunch of web browsers...

When I don't run SliTaz 3/5 (which I still do most of the time), I'm using a specially shrunk and customized version of Porteus with SeaMonkey. In my opinion SeaMonkey is an excellent browser that's still maintained and regularly updated by some enthusiasts in Germany (I think). It's also much smaller than the Chrom(e/ium) based monsters.

Hello slitaz_user4,

I'm afraid I've lost this package with the computer where I had installed Next64. And as a misfortune never comes alone, the external HD that served me for backups died 2 monthes ago; not realy a good year.

Anyway the package needed to be upgraded. I'm going to try to build a newest release but I don't promise you anything, retired people are so busy

Alternatively, kindly consider including it on http://distro.ibiblio.org/slitaz/packages/next64/

This is beyond my competence.

I didn't forget you but I don't understand why, I don't success to download the .deb ([c]Error: Unable to locate the brave-browser package[/c]) and yet I can see it when I list the packages on the debian repo... I'll try again.

I found the .deb file for Brave Browser on GitHub- https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/download/v1.44.101/brave-browser_1.44.101_amd64.deb

Hello slitaz_user4,

I finally solved my "issue" with the debian repository (I was using a debian based distro 32bit to access at the 64bit repository :-/ shame on me...)

Luckily I found the very first Next64 iso (console only) I made in the past so I can convert the .deb package in .tazpkg

Hello Ceel,

I could install the Brave Browser using the tazpkg that you have created and posted. It works well. I am typing out this reply message using the newly installed Brave Browser.

Thanks a lot for your efforts.

P.S- For the benefit of other users, I wanted to inform that pavucontrol is not working for me on SliTaz-Next64. To get sound, I am using apulse and I am getting audio on launching the browser with "apulse brave-browser-stable" from the command line (non-root).

Good to know, I didn't have a fast way to test it.

Maybe I'll update the package some time to time; then I'll post the new link in this topic.
