Upgraded 3.0 to 4.0 -now only shows text prompt at boot

Hi folks,

I'm a newbie to Linux, though I've used it for a while. I upgraded from Slitaz 3.0 to 4.0 (in the option drop down menu for which partition to upgrade, I could choose between hda1 and hda5 in the drop-down menu, and randomly chose hda1).

On boot, now I only get a text prompt asking for login-name and password. I logged in correctly, but only get a new line prompting me again, which stumps me since I only have experience using a GUI.

How can I configure the system to enter the GUI at startup?

Alex

What does using the command [c]startx[/c] give you?

Re: Upgraded 3.0 to 4.0 -now only shows text prompt at boot

It gives me a page of text. The first four lines (am entering them manually) are

chown: unknown user/group [my login-name]:users

chown: unknown user/group [my login-name]:users

-XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer : Unable to open socket for inet6

-XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inte6/[the personal name I gave my computer]:0

and further down it says

Current Operating System: Linux [my personal computer-name] 2.6.37-Slitaz #2 SMP (and then gives a date, probably the date I installed Slitaz 3.0) i686

Another thing about startup: It now asks me to select between two soundcards every time.

Let's try adding the group "users" then:

1. [c]su[/c] (default password is root - you may have changed this)

2. [c]addgroup users[/c]

3. Try running [c]startx[/c] again

/root/.xsession: .: line 3: can't open '/root/.config/slitaz/applications.conf'

Hello Alexbn,

I don't understand how you upgrade/install (?) SliTaz 4.0.

When you say "I upgraded from Slitaz 3.0 to 4.0", do you mean SliTaz 3.0 was running and you run tazpkg-installer and ask for Upgrade ?

You say too "I could choose between hda1 and hda5 in the drop-down menu, and randomly chose hda1"

I nerver done upgrades, only install; I suppose if you ask for an upgrade you don't have to choose the partiton, SliTaz knows where it is installed.

Or did you install SliTaz 4.0 from a live using Tazpanel ?

Re: Upgraded 3.0 to 4.0 -now only shows text prompt at boot

Alexbn,

Was SliTaz 3.0 installed on the same partition (hda1) ?

Did you ask to Tazpanel to format the partition before installing ?

What does Grub propose ?

Can you see brievly an error message before prompt asks you for login ?

I had a similar problem two years ago after installing a cooking; I remember a message like "Failed to execute login command" or something like that was shortly displayed and then prompt asked me for login. And like you I could log.

Re: Upgraded 3.0 to 4.0 -now only shows text prompt at boot

I don't know which partition SliTaz 3.0 was installed on. It's not a dual-boot.

I believe I did not ask Tazpanel to format the partition before installing.

The Grub command outputs 10 lines (and perhaps it's not finished outputting?):

(Line 1:) Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may may take a long time.

(Line 4:) end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

(Line 6:) GRUB4DOS 0.4.4 2012-04-09, Memory 640 k /3m, MenuEnd: 0xB7347054

There is no error message before the prompt asks me for login.

Re: Upgraded 3.0 to 4.0 -now only shows text prompt at boot

Is there any alternative way of retaining the settings from SliTaz 3.0 when installing 4.0?
