Hard disk question

Hi, I have a problem with a hard drive that suddenly failed for no reason. Now I'd like to try to figure out if it's a mechanical or electronic problem (in which case I'd attempt board replacement).

The various e2fsck attempts lead to various damaged clusters, but almost never the same ones.

When scanning those clusters the hard disk stops responding (i/o error) and then it has to be disconnected and reconnected to resume.

There are no abnormal ticks as I have seen on other times on hard disks with damaged heads and disks.

dd if=dev/zero of=/dev/sdb crashes as above at a certain point when writing/reading, about in the same memory area, even if repeating the action is not always exactly the same.

I had the entire source of my LFS in here, and it had cost me several months of work. Now everything is lost (or almost)...

Do you think there is any hope with the pcb change, or do you think it is completely useless?

Salve, ho un problema con un hard disk che improvvisamente si è guastato senza motivo. Ora vorrei cercare di capire se è un problema meccanico o elettronico (in questo caso tenterei la sostituzione della scheda).

I vari tentativi di e2fsck portano a vari cluster danneggiati, ma quasi mai sempre gli stessi.

Quando avviene la scansione su quei cluster l'hard disk non risponde più (i/o error) dopodichè occorre scollegarlo e riattaccarlo per poter riprendere.

Non ci sono ticchetti anomali come altre volte ho constatato su hard disk con testine e dischi danneggiati.

dd if=dev/zero of=/dev/sdb si blocca come sopra in un certo punto alla scrittura/lettura, circa nella stessa zona di memoria, anche se ripetendo l'azione non è esattamente sempre identica.

Qui dentro avevo l'intero sorgente della mia LFS e mi era costato parecchi mesi di lavoro. Ora è tutto perso (o quasi)...

Secondo voi ci sono speranze con il cambio della pcb, oppure ritenete che sia del tutto inutile?

Hi, with testdisk I had recovered a lot of stuff (~40GB), too bad there are so many corrupted files though. But it's better than nothing...

Smartctl finds me an avalanche of errors. On that fact it seems unlikely to me that the hard drive is physically damaged to that extent. I find (and hope) that it is the firmware corrupted. For the small expense I decided to try my luck. I purchased one (pcb).

Ciao, con testdisk avevo recuperato molta roba (~40GB), peccato però che siano tanti i file corrotti. Ma è sempre meglio di niente...

Smartctl mi trova una valanga di errori. Su questo fatto mi sembra improbabile che l'hard disk fisicamente sia danneggiato fino a quel punto. Trovo (e spero) che sia il firmware corrotto. Per la spesa esigua ho deciso di tentare la fortuna. Ne ho acquistato una (pcb).
