Tazlito on Alpine Linux

Hello,

I have been trying to build a custom alpine linux live iso and, for the sake of experimentation, i decided to try tazlito.

So, I installed tazlito on alpine on the hd, edited the configuration file and ran tazlito writeiso (I want to generate the live iso from the installed system).

Tazlito created the rootfs.gz file but didn't find the image I mounted on /media/cdrom, hence didn't created the iso.

Just for curiosity, I copied the rootfs.gz in my slitaz frugal install and booted it, both using slitaz kernel and alpine. Unsurprisingly, I got a kernel panic smile

Here are my qestions:

1) which iso should I mount on /media/cdrom so that tazlito can grab the boot files? I tried with slitaz iso but I wonder if I shoud use an alpine iso instead.

2) where can I find more information about using tazlito on a distro other than slitaz and the problematic involved?

3) the question I should have asked first. Is this advisable or even feasible?

Thanks.

Re: Tazlito on Alpine Linux

Hi, tazlito I don't know how long he has had a bug.... I had provided the patch but no one seems to care....

https://forum.slitaz.org/topic/tazlito-writeiso-1#post-50557

Applying it works, or at least it did :-)

Edit: alpine has a kernel with boot initrd. Tazlito does not provide the initial ram to run it. You need a kernel that has the capabilities to recognize the hardware without the need for pre-start with initrd.

Applicandola funziona, o almeno funzionava :-)

Re: Tazlito on Alpine Linux

@gibor

Thanks for the prompt answer.

I might try using slax kernel. I tried to build the image using linux live kit and had some (partial) success.

Do you know if tazlito can be configured so that it searches the boot files somewhere else than /media/cdrom?

I'll check the patch.

Re: Tazlito on Alpine Linux

It all depends on the init if it continues loading, or if it looks for a new init on the ramdisk (initrd).

Some distros even work as slitaz, others don't want to know.

Re: Tazlito on Alpine Linux

Slax kernel uses initrd, so it won't probably work.

I need to look into the init and the config files to see what they point at.

I think tazlito is one of the most versatile and complete build systems and it would be awesome if it could be ported on other distros.

Re: Tazlito on Alpine Linux

Tazlito beyond the graphics does nothing more than selectively compress the root files and folders. Analyzing the script easily traces what they are. Running the same thing from the command line, perhaps keeping the initial boot initrd, along with the live kernel and rootfs, may be enough to recreate a modified iso of all distributions.

Good point. Using the command line would also allow me more control and understanding over the process.

Buon punto.
