checking file sytem on every startup

I have slitaz 5 32 bit installed on an old PIII Panasonic Toughbook. Every time I start up I get the following error show up during the boot process

Checking filesystem UUID=XXXXXXXX(long list leters and numbers)

/dev/sda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced/

There is hard drive activity for a minute or so and then I get a normal start.

Not an issue other than the start up time is slower and it shouldnt do this every time.

It is a version of rolling I downloaded a while ago. I do not update the system as when I do it breaks several things but I don't go on line with it, mainly word processing using old version of LibreOffice.

Can I stop this start up error.

I meat a similar problem in the past on an EXT2 partition:

The only solution I found was to come back to EXT3.

Thanks Ceel for the prompt response.

Does that means re-formatting and losing the current instalation. Is there a simple way to convert without having to re-install. Ive looked on google and it seems pretty complex for me who isn't terribly linux skilled.

If your sda1 is EXT2 formatted, it is possible this is the cause (even if I still didn't understand why...).

So formatting it in EXT3 does mean losing your current installation; no way to convert an EXT2 partition to EXT3 keeping the data on it, sorry.

I’ll bite the bullet and reinstall which doesn’t take long even on this old laptop.

Final note.

I reinstalled using EXT3 partition and the error message has not appeared and I get ‘clean’ startups.
