[Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

Hi, I have just allowed a massive upgrade of my SliTaz 4 RC2: linux kernel, openbox, lxpanel, xorg

It has broken:

[*]automounting of my /home partition: want ext3 rather than ext4 and could not automount it, I've had to edit /etc/fstab and change to ext4: then it has worked as intended

[*]Since new kernel, wants to probe sound card at boot with dialog menu and cannot find it when I try Intel (no other choice excepted no sound probing): it is audio device from Intel or nVidia chip (I could theorically use either one or the other, I was using Intel one since now). They are still pointed out in [c]lspci | grep -i audio[/c].

[*]Xorg cannot use the whole screen, and 'nouveau' seems to be back :-( everything is pushed to right and to bottom, and then rightest and lowest part of screen are out of material device sight surface.

[*]automount is not possible anymore from PCManFM for my FAT32 data partition (that I was not mounting automatically)

[*]openbox seems not to work correctly, particularly colors from themes, seems not to be found and libs missing: libobrender (further version installed, [c]ln -s[/c] made me pass over this step), libobparser (that I was unable to get back from any available package), maybe more ?

I will make some more tests before posting back, just to get ideas written and understand better what really happens.

Firstly, I will try to get back to previous kernel from a SliTaz4 stable ISO image. I am not able at this stage to point out what is really causing all of this: many errors, and just one and many consequences from it ?

Re: [Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

I got back to kernel 2.6.37 : nothing has changed, it is even worse: usable screen surface for lxpanel (and upper lxpanel only, not bottom one neither other apps) is more and more reduced at each reboot, pushed to right and bottom... Lower lxpanel taskbar though can cross the real screen surface on the full width, and just at the bottom edge. WTF ? Prolly not linked to kernel switch, but there are too many dysfunctions for me to understand anything clearly.

Still got no sound, as logs show it.

I seriously need some help, I do not even understand what is happening.

Re: [Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

[c]uname -a[/c] => Linux slitaz 2.6.37-slitaz #2 SMP Wed Mar 7 10:36:39 CET 2012 i686 GNU/Linux

SliTaz 4 is stable repo now,you update from cooking repo?

#tazpkg -cc

#tazpkg set-release stable

I never do mass update, start with installing linux-sound and other kernel module tazpkgs.

Re: [Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

Yup, this was weird: I started with RC1 then switched to RC2 with overwrite-mode installation: it was always on cooking repository since this one and probably RC1 (I had not checked at this moment) and as I cannot re-install stable from tazinst in tazpanel without reformatting my /home (that I do NOT want, but even checking out the checkbox it stills formats it), I kept like that.

I 'm fed up with systematically reinstalling all my home files each time that I want to try to reinstall system partition.

So yes, to answer clearly: I'm updating from cooking (i would have prefered stable indeed).

Re: [Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

I don't f...cking believe it : I was unable to load my FAT32 data partition because... I lost dosfstools and mtools (that were installed before upgrade). What is this mess ?!

Grrrr I will try to save my /home and get a new SliTaz 4 stable, this type of massive shrunk of my system is too much for my MAIN system.

I do not even want to become paranoid but I 've just booted Ubuntu after upgrade and even this boot is all scrambled. We are all okay that it is NOT possible that it is linked to SliTaz errors, on a different partition, okay ?

**quietly loosing my mind**

Er, I upgrade from RC3 to Stable. You should have done tazpkg set-release stable, tazpkg recharge, tazpkg get-install tazpkg and tazpkg up - it worked for me with some minor problems. Don't upgrade to cooking since it's kind of a mess right now and some genius on the mailing list suggested we strip the 3g-ntfs package which disables formatting devices as such in gparted - it also creates mounting issuses with FAT32 or NTFS partitions.

Oh and I had to fix the blank desktop too. I did it by booting with my LiveCD and copying .config from tux to my home directory. I then did a chown -R brenton:brenton .config on it.

I took a much better option: tar'ing all my personal stuff preserving file attributes, all-blank-brand-new installation from scratch, and restoring my backups. Doing it at this very moment. wink

Sometimes doing it from scratch is best - Good idea with tar'ing stuff. I hate losing my attributes each time I upgrade...

Re: [Openbox/LXPanel/Xorg/sound core] Everything is broken from last upgrade

TAR is really my favorite backup tool, so simple and flexible. dd is looooong and it is hard to get a backup in a different sized partition, partimage is cool but too long too. Sometimes the simplest is the best, don't you agree  ? wink

I've installed back Flash, Java (manual install from official java .bin release, plain, straight and working), pasted my whole .mozilla and .thunderbird hidden folder back like a charm.

Just to work w/ the ~#|@ nVidia stuff now. I don't see neither "nouveau" nor "nv" anywhere, lsmod is not more informative. I will try tazx after tweaking with tazhw or hwsetup.... and after backing up /etc/X11 tongue
