I booted Slitaz on an old Laptop but can't get WiFi working. What tips can you give me.
I found the WiFi configure
I entered
WiFi name
Preshared Wireless Key
WPA2
I can see that in the text configuration file.
but it still doesn't work.
How can I know if maybe the cause is that Slitaz doesn't "play nicely" with my WiFi card. I got WiFi working quickly with Puppy Linux.

I guess you should install wifi firmware appropriate to your hardware first. It's available via tazpkg ot tazpanel.
Once you do it, ot should work smoothly - at least that was the issue in my case.

It has an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network driver.
Does this, in any way, explain the problem I'm having? How do I install the correct drivers?

Download: http://people.slitaz.org/~mojo/stuff/ipw2200-firmware-3.1.tazpkg
Open terminal,su , password: root
tazpkg install ipw2200-firmware-3.1.tazpkg
modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
/etc/init.d/network.sh restart

Did that, put it on DiskOnKey and then moved it to Laptop
> Open terminal,su , password: root
Okey dokey
> tazpkg install ipw2200-firmware-3.1.tazpkg modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
Seems to have run successfully
"ipw2200-firmware package is already installed"
> /etc/init.d/network.sh restart
"sh: etc/init.d/network.sh: not found"
Was this supposed to be all "one line" with the above part?
Still no WiFi. Am I close?

Download this if your running Slitaz-4.0:
http://mirror.slitaz.org/packages/4.0/slitaz-boot-scripts-4.7.2.tazpkg
Open terminal,su , password: root
Type this:
[c]tazpkg install slitaz-boot-scripts-4.7.2.tazpkg --forced[/c]
Hit enter key
Type this:
[c]tazpkg install ipw2200-firmware-3.1.tazpkg --forced[/c]
Hit enter key.
Type this:
[c]modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200[/c]
Hit enter key
Type this, there is a space before restart:
[c]/etc/init.d/network.sh restart[/c]
If you get more errors:
Your download,burn,or install is bad.
Verify the md5sum of your downloaded iso match's it's md5.
Give me this info:
How is slitaz installed/running ?
Is slitaz burned on cdr or on usbkey?
If it's on usb key how did you install it?
Which slitaz iso are you using ?

It worked. Thanks so much.
I'm on a Live CD, will this be persistent, will it be there the next time I reboot?
If I now want to install Slitaz to the HD do I have to go through this again?

Good news ;-)
You will have to repeat to connect until you install to a rw drive.
Slitaz run's in ram, when you shutdown whatever changes made are lost.

@lbrmon
The driver for RTL8188ce is no longer supported by Realtek. You'll have to compile it yourself.
Open a terminal as root
Install bash
[c] # tazpkg -gi bash[/c]
Install linux-source
[c] # tazpkg -gi linux-source[/c]
Install the kernel source
[c] # get-linux-source[/c]
Download the sources of the driver from here: https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce/archive/master.zip
in your home folder (ie: tux)
Unzip the file (right click, Extract, Extract here)
Go to the directory
[c] cd /home/tux/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce-master[/c]
Compile the driver
[c] # make[/c]
Install the driver to the kernel
[c] # make install[/c]
Reboot and configure your wifi with TazPanel.
Hope it'll work.

Hi Ceel,
As I run Slitaz on Live-USB, all the installed will be deleted after reboot. Please advise further help.

Sorry lbrmon, my crystal ball has forgotten to tell me you were using a Live.
Lives do not allow to save changes you've made in the filesystem. But you can build a rootfs to replace the one of your Live.
How is your LiveUSB formated: ext or fat?
What ISO did you use to create your LiveUSB, core or 4-in-1?
What tool did you use to create your Live? From Linux or Windows?
Offline
Hi Ceel, Below are info asked:
1. Universal USB Installer was used to create the Live USB;
2. As default setting the USB was formatted as FAT32;
3. SliTaz 5.0 RC-2 was used to create the Live USB ( if required, i can change to Slitaz 4.0 stable)
Best Regards

tux@slitaz:~$ uname -a
Linux slitaz 2.6.37-slitaz #2 SMP Wed Mar 7 10:36:39 CET 2012 i686
Linux slitaz 2.6.37-slitaz is kernel for SliTaz 4.0
You cannot have used slitaz-5.0-rc2.iso... or you did a new Live.
Please confirm.
SliTaz 5.0 has kernel 3.2.53. According to the site where I found the sources:
A mirror of the "official" Realtek kernel module for the 8188CE (and others) - note that this driver is really no better or worse than the one directly in-kernel, since the driver can't fix horrid hardware. This also probably doesn't compile properly on newer kernels.
But we can try.

In fact I have tried Slitaz 4.0 before the Cooking version 5.0, but both failed to detect and start the WiFi interface. Do you think that it is because of the firmware module issue? or just the driver incompatible? And what if i make the LIVEUSB with Slitaz 4.0 persistent and then any other way to try?
Regards
Offline
No, it's not because of the hardware or the firmware, it's just because SliTaz ISO don't have any wireless drivers. You have to install them yourself and then configure the wifi.
Unfortunately, your firmware is not in the SliTaz repository; regardless the version, you'll have to compile it anyway.
The driver should work for kernel version 2.6.35 and higher but as there is no support anymore for it, it is possible you meet troubles with more recent kernel version as 3.2.53.
A persistent LiveUSB save only /home; it won't save neither the wifi configuration nor the driver. The only way will be to build a new rootfs with tazusb.
What about a full installation?
Offline
I tired full installation via tazusb, but Slitaz failed boot from USB, even though i chose to format the USB during installation process. Maybe i should use Gparted to complete formatting to EXT2 or EXT3 beforehand?
