I'm changing an old laptop from Ubuntu to Slitaz
According to GParted my system now has
hda1 ext4 36.77 GB
hda2 extended 501 MB
/hda5 linux swap 501 MB
I can wipe the disk.
What do you recommend for Slitaz
How much for Slitaz
How much for Home
Should I allocate for Swap file? If so How much?

Depends on how much software you plan to install.
If you want to add another few versions of linux and multiboot.
You may want to install the cooking version of slitaz in addition to 4.0 once it matures.
In which case you would want 2 root partitions and a /home

- I'm not sure how to answer that. But certainly LibreOffice (or equivalent), and a few more programs. But I think I'll try to keep it simple and light, a "play" computer for a child.

I daily run SliTaz on my old laptop with the same setup, 40GB HDD, 512 MB RAM.
I have the HDD partitioned into 5 partitions:
[*]hda1: 8GB Win XP (for tazinst tests)
[*]hda2: 2GB Linux Swap
[*]hda3: 8GB SliTaz stable
[*]hda4: extended partition
hda5: 8GB SliTaz cooking
[*]hda6: 8GB Home
I also keep two other small partitions for testing purposes.
I'm planning a full HDD repartitionning as 1 GB should suffice for linux swap, and 4GB for any SliTaz partition.

Okay so I could do: What formats would you recommend, ext4 for all?
hda1: 4GB Slitaz
hda2: 4GB Cooking
hda3: 1GB Linux Swap
hda4: Extended partition
... hda5: (remaining space) Home

ext4 is faster than ext3 and both have the journalling advantage over ext2, but ext3 is more mature.
For an old laptop at home I'd say ext4.

I ended up with ext3 for the Slitaz partition and for Home.
Its running great.
