Low memory system hang

I'm looking to install Debian on a very old system as part of a laptop upcycling project. To do this, I need to get the disk partitioned so it will host a swap file, and to do this, I need to run some kind of livecd. Thought Slitaz might be the one, but not got there yet.

Trying to run version 4.0 of slitaz-lowram-cdrom and it arrives at what looks like an X session, and the mouse moves for a moment, but then it hangs at a grey screen with an immobile mouse.

I'm using Virtualbox to emulate the target system - single 266MHz CPU, 32MB ram, 3Gig disk. In case you run Virtualbox too, I've attached a zipped copy of the Machine specification directory from the Virtualbox VMs folder in my home directory.
