Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

I have been using the radeon driver on two PC running older Cooking versions but it appears there are problems with Slitaz 4 running radeon.

I booted off Slitaz 4.0 livecd installed radeon driver (default vesa driver gives me a shimmering screen which is almost impossible to read!) and modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Devices.conf to replace vesa with radeon. When I exit X session, I get black screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or Ctrl+Alt+BKSP as someone else mentioned in another post) does not take me to a command prompt either.

I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

Vesa driver should work, did you try booting with nomodeset.

Then use tazx while connected to the internet to install the correct driver ati.radeonhd,mach64...

Otherwise try the xorg-light flavor of slitaz-4.0

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

@mojo, is there a way to disable kernel mode setting when booting from a livecd? Also, I noticed that when booting from livecd I get mtrr errors reported when hald is started - not sure whether this has anything to do with the problem. I will try xorg-light flavor if everything else fails...

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

Turn off KMS :

Slitaz-4.0 at orange boot menu arrow down to SliTaz core Live

Hit the tab key, type [c]nomodeset[/c] after auto_login hit enter.

MTRR: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/error-setting-mtt#post-8793

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

All good....as per mojo's instructions above,

1. added 'nomodeset lang=en_US kmap=us' to boot command

2. as per the link describing the MTRR issue, lang=en_US and kmap=us got rid of the MTRR errors.

3. Once booted, ran tazx and installed the ati driver (for my Radeon 9200 SE card)

Now I have the right screen resolution.

Many thanks mojo!

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

I'm running slitaz 3.0 and slitaz 4.0, with Radeon IGP320M card and ATI driver. On 3.0, glxgears shows framerates of over 100Hz, but on 4.0, glxgears shows 10Hz. As far as I can tell, drm, dri, agp are all installed correctly on both versions.

Does anyone have any ideas why the framerate is so low on 4.0?

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

I may be wrong but I suspect kernel modesetting has got something to do with the glxgears frame rate. Try turning modesetting off and see whether it makes any difference. As far as I can remember this was the case with Slitaz 3.

Re: Slitaz 4.0 and Radeon driver

Don't know if mode setting makes any difference. I re-installed 4.0 from iso, added the ati driver & now I get 100+ fps.
