Developers of the Linux kernel(s) and ALSA have been catching up to HDMI technology.

Recent versions have many hdmi fixes; they're moving beyond 1995!

(Someday they may even update obsolete EDID table handling.)

Of course, the real challenge is (persistent usable) documentation.

Hardware comes in a multitude of configurations; there's confusion aplenty on the www.

Sound and video drivers have been around for a long time.

Usable configuration instructions for HDMI, not so much.  They change a lot, too.

Ubuntu kernel Bug #793592 was fixed [2012-05-08] in UPSTREAM Linux kernel(s) 3.0.31, 3.3.5, and 3.4; ALSA didn't even support audio over hdmi until 1.0.16, the 2012-01-25 version 1.0.25 release includes over two dozen hdmi-related changes.
