hp backend failure

Running Slitaz 4.0 and installed hplip.

Did a hp-setup -bnet to define my network attached printer. Everything appears OK till I do a test print which fails with the following message.

I also cannot use Xsane. I get 'Failed to open device hp:/net/Photosmart_2700_series?zc=HP2850A0 Invalid argument' message.

I have no problems with the older cooking version running hp-setup and configuring the printer and get it to scan using xsane.

hplip in repo is not compiled with network support.

If your using the version I compiled it may be outdated.

@mojo, what put me off was that I was able to set up the printer using hplip without any segmentation faults this time and I naturally assumed that the 4.0 hplip was network enabled. I admit I should not have assumed this and should have tried out the version you made available earlier - my apologies for not checking out all options!

Downloaded hplip you compiled with networking support and all appears to be good now. Thanks.

This brings me to another question. Has any thought been given to the possibility of making both versions of hplip available through repos? I can appreciate the fact that not many people would want networking support and hence the need to cut out on functions that may be less used. But if both versions of hplip (one without network support and one with) were to be available then users have the option of selecting what they need. Just a suggestion without knowing the extra work load this may create for others.

The way things are now, I would need to block the version of hplip from upgrading and should there be any newer version would have to request some one to re-compile it and make it available separately.

I guess the other option may be to have some doco on how to modify a package?
