xterm reverse search not working (Ctrl+r)

The reverse search function in xterm is not working. Ctrl+r does nothing. Tried sakura, ctrl+r reuslts in this weird character : [square with 0012 in it]. Other shortcuts (ctrl+l) work ok. I'm running Slitaz 3.0 with xvesa. Any ideas?
