Installing on an external USB drive

I am running Ubuntu on one of my internal HDDs and Slitaz 4 on another and I am using Ubuntu grub to boot into either of the systems.

I would like to install Slitaz on an external USB drive for trying out various flavours without having to change the bootloader. I can install Slitaz flavours on my external HDD ok and get Ubuntu bootloader to point to it but cannot boot from the external drive.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong here? Thanks

I installed LinuxMint on the same external USB drive and I am able to boot without any problems.

I get kernel panic message with Slitaz 4.0 when trying to boot from this external USB drive. The message is

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS. Unable to mount root fs on unknown -block (0,0).

Would appreciate if anyone can give me some pointers to resolve this. Thanks

PS: no issues whatsoever with booting from Slitaz 4.0 installation on an internal drive.

OK, finally success....

For the benefit of anyone else trying to do what I am doing, the solution was simply to use 'rootdelay=8' in the grub command line as per mojo's suggestion in http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/40-rc1-crashing-on-boot-up-with-kernel-panic-help#post-6667
